Discussion: Hollywood Sex Misconduct Crisis Grows With Ratner, Hoffman Accusations

What bothers me about all these men getting in trouble for inappropriate behavior toward women 30 years ago is that for most of that time Clarence Thomas has been and remains a Supreme Court Justice with lifetime tenure. Everyone knew at the time of his conformation hearing, especially those of us who worked with and around women, that Thomas was lying and Anita Hill was telling the truth because up until those hearings almost all men behaved that way toward women in the workplace.

That is it was not until Anita Hill let us men know the behavior was not appreciated, that we changed our behavior. I for example have not told a dirty joke to a woman coworker since Anita Hill testified before Congress.

So before we go after all these actors and other men for what is today, and should have been since 1990 when Anita Hill testified, we should start by insisting Clarence Thomas be forced to resign or be impeached for not only his inappropriate behavior toward women before being appointed to the Court, but also for lying about it under oath.

This is going to end up like the day-care child abuse “scandal” of 20 years ago—real misconduct will be conflated with lies and imaginary events to destroy a lot of people who haven’t done anything.

I don’t for a minute doubt that many awful acts have been committed by assorted people in positions of power or trust.
But some of this will turn out to be imaginary, revenge, or even Munchhausen syndrome. It always happens that way, and some good people are going to get tarred by this.

The Little Rascals daycare case still gets me angry.

“It is not reflective of who I am.” Your behavior does not reflect who you are?

Its already starting to look the way you describe. Separating the wheat from the chaff is going to be difficult when there is no presumption of innocence and allegations can be made from decades ago. I hate to say that too, because my first inclination is to whole-heartedly want to believe the victim…but it gets confusing when there is a bandwagon effect happening, proving there is power in numbers, but also with a tendency to obscure the individual complaints of harassment and assault being levied on an individual basis. It even gets hard to comment on such things without being instantly reacted to as being controversial after a while with some kind of knee-jerk reaction. I don’t know…

I guess if you’re ever foolish enough to put these people on a pedestal to begin with, its going to make the news even harder for you when they do fall. But Dustin Hoffman? Damn!

Remember the expression “high tech lynching?” Probably coined by a bunch of Reagan Era Civil Rights Rollback handlers of Clarence Thomas during the hearings who were also sitting on the committee. Remember Thomas support witness John Dogget who also accused his questioners of racism? This is who George H. W. Bush chose to succeed the legendary Thurgood Marshall. Yeah, the same guy who chose Dan Quayle to be VP.

“Hoffman issued a statement Wednesday, apologizing for 'anything I might have done could have put her in an uncomfortable situation. I am sorry. It is not reflective of who I am.””

So if it’s not who you are, Dustin, who is it? Your evil twin Lustin? That is a very lame, inane kinda, sorta, if you squint just right, apology.

I think it’s one of the longest criminal trials in U.S history.
The stalwart Civil Libertarian VillageVoice columnist Nat Hentoff frequently wrote about how absurd these cases were.

That Ratner is on this growing list surprises me not in the least. At a high level, everything we’re learning about the corrupt culture in the media, entertainment and political sectors shows just how the mix of power and sexism yielded a toxic misogynistic brew that enabled people to believe the worst rumors about HRC and discredit the truths about Trump.

Too bad Judge Wapner is no longer with us to oversee a trial.

yes - high probably that this will mutate in all directions

  • Andy Dick got whacked - which may be more a matter of his being generally irritating and constantly ‘over-the-edge’ … hey…probably anybody who ever attended an Andrew Dice Clay performance could think they have grounds for a case.

The reality is that while the issues in these cases are related to sexual behavior - they are fundamentally about the twisted use of power … and the weird element is that as this unfolds - there will be complaints brought forward that may be more about retaliatory wielding of power - either against a specific person - or for individual gain. In a world where the abuse of power is rampant - it is often not long before the process of holding people accountable for said abuse - gets hijacked in various ways - and is then transformed into another power abuse of a new manner.

Evil twin lustin. Lol.

Shit, all of these guys have been doing this stuff for like about a century now.
Its not just reflective, it defines them.

20 years ago?
I was thinking the same thing, by the way.
I’d add that what will happen is that the class of powerful people who get away with sexual misconduct will change, but the underlying issue will remain.

And that is a real concern. I agree 100%. There certainly is a ton of wrong behavior. But there is also score-settling, and false accusations.

I have doubts myself about a single woman and a single man. OK, Hoffman may have been off with that woman. Piven might have as well.

I put more credence into an account when 2, 3, 4 women come forward. I initially had doubts about the Cosby allegations. However, after 10, 11, 12, 20, 30, 40, 50 women came forward, and there was drugging involved, then it was clear that a major issue was going on with this piece of crap.

It’s the single allegations that are 30 years old that I wonder about.
