Discussion: Hiring Drops As US Employers Add Only 20,000 Jobs

The Bureau of Labor Statistics tracks that, too.
Last year, the revisions were all over the board–August’s revision went up 85,000, and December’s went down 85,000.

Yep, $1 trillion in stock buybacks since the tax cut.

They really need a dedicated arm of the party that does messaging. Not like the Pukes do, but something that can tout the achievements and the general goals of the party and where they want it to go, so that it has resonance beyond one-offs when they’re invited on cable to speak as individuals. The Dems tend to look like they’re offering a didactic on policy when they appear on the networks instead of giving an overall view of what the party stands for.

Obama actually was very good at defining what the party stood for and could rally the base to stand up and be counted on to push those goals. But these days we need a unifying message that puts it all together for the public. I don’t see that these days.

Even today I know what FDR stood for within the Democratic party, especially when it came to economics and the working class, and everybody back then did too. The messaging was clear. Something like that needs to happen again.

I don’t know about you but I remember when $1 million dollars sounded like a lot of money. That’s chump change now.

Y’know what I could do with a trillion dollars? I don’t either. Probably get my carpets cleaned. I have a small imagination.

And they jiggled the numbers last month to make the administration look good.

Uh huh.

I am guessing that January report will eventually be adjusted downward too.

Good point - I believe the people idled by the shutdown were also not counted as unemployed even though they qualified for unemployment benefits. There was no similar exclusion for people taking a second job to help make ends meet.

If I could recommend this ten times, I would. It does beggar belief that the White House that bailed out the economy after 2008, saved Detroit, established the market for electric cars, stabilized the banking system, put people back to work, made health care available to every family, and performed for eight years without a SINGLE god damned scandal or ethical lapse could never figure out out how to tell its story. I shake my head about that every day.

Of course, Dumbass has the US trade deficit up to record numbers, farmers are still hurting from his idiot trade war, and the Pentagon wants to use military pay for The Wall of Stupid, so I guess we have to slap paint over the burning dumpster wherever we can.

I don’t agree. Obama got re-elected comfortably and would have crushed Trump for a third term had he been eligible. Biden would have won if he’d run (and possibly in a landslide). Hillary had baggage that had nothing to do with Obama and just couldn’t connect with voters (yes she won the popular vote, but how many who voted for her were enthused?). Obama told his story just fine IMO.

Well we just gave to agree to disagree on that.

Better buy a really big catastrophic liability policy from Berkshire Hathaway. Really big. Actuarial premiums will be small, but worth it. Stipulate payment in small gold coin, ammunition and antibiotics.

And stock buybacks were not even legal until the Reagan years – they used to be considered a form of manipulation.

I’m sure the base is having demonstrations thanking Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grammes a week.

Trump is now trying to bully automakers into dropping the fuel-efficiency standards President Obama implemented as part of the auto bailout. He is threatening to nationalize California’s stricter standards if they don’t toe the line.

It’s a perennial puzzle: Does he think he can actually do these things, like a divine-right king (i.e., is he delusional), or is it posturing and bluff, or both?

Agreed, our marketing has been very poor. We need to be focusing on the 20-30 somethings for this next election.

Don’t know, but he has taken a wrecking ball to our economy.

Between threatening to cut tax credits and subsidies for renewable energy, trying to prop up antiquated coal-firing power plants that are slated to be mothballed, paying farmers to compensate for their losses to the trade wars, he is acting like an autocrat.

Always. But just in the last few days he’s been attacking green stuff in a really vicious way.

Yes, I don’t know if it’s to pile on the derision over AOC’s Green New Deal, and hold it up as emblematic of the Democrats’ clueless rush to a utopian boondoggle, or if he is just getting more impulsive and desperate.
