Discussion for article #237423

The key sentence in this report is, “Clinton did not offer specific policy proposals in her speech.”

I thought it was a really good speech, and I definitely like this Hillary and will support her.

That’s not how this is done.

It was a “broad vision” event to start a campaign, not a policy wonk session, or debate prep.

Though they were mocked by pundits and oligarchs at the time as Dirty Fucking Hippies, I believe that when the political history of the early 21st century is written, Occupy is going to be seen as a watershed moment. Those DFH’s banging plastic drums in the canyons of Wall Street changed the dialog and dragged economic unfairness out into the light. A huge, historical shift.

Exactly.

Hillary will have to** FIGHT** to make her audiences reflective of America,A commentator made that observation as did I when looking at the diversity of the crowd.Right now she IMO is anyone but A republican.

Are we just going to give up and take what few crumbs are offered by the likes of Romney, foreign multinationals and the Koch Brothers? Who but a woman knows more about how that feels like in our society? That’s why Hillary makes the perfect candidate for the underemployed and downtrodden workers of America.

She said she would be offering specific proposals in the coming weeks.

I know “that’s not how it’s done.” But that’s the way it should be done!

Politicians like Clinton (and Obama) have perfected the technique of saying lots of feel-good stuff without committing to any particulars. Clinton’s people have been studying the populist appeal of Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders and think they have worked out the perfect line for Clinton to walk in order to earn some of that appeal without actually having to say anything that would upset her Wall Street backers. This has been her technique on all recent issues. What is Clinton’s position on the Keystone XL pipeline, for instance? Or on the TPP? How about her opinions on the recent incidents of police brutality? There’s no doubt how Bernie Sanders feels about these issues.

It’s highly disturbing that the leading candidate, a former Senator, Cabinet Secretary, and First Lady, cannot commit to a single concrete policy. And it’s also disturbing that people swoon all over her for mere lip service. Compare Sander’s announcement speech to Clinton’s—he was absolutely loaded with specific legislation that he would support (much of it already having been introduced by Sanders himself).

Obama did the same thing—remember his speeches denigrating the Patriot Act? Or his promise to “get his comfortable shoes” and march with protesters against union busting laws? Sounded great at the time. But when it came down to brass tacks, Obama voted for the Telecom Immunity bill and ignored the Wisconsin union protests. We got suckered by Obama, and I’m determined not to let Hillary get away with it also.

You would prefer Romney’s Powerpoint presentation at his conservative confab and Palinesque GOP brawl this weekend?

Yea sure. Is there any reason why she couldn’t do so now?

It’s not like she needs time to learn the ropes—she was a Senator, a Cabinet member, and a First Lady. She’s just stalling.

Welcome to American politics. Sure we know how Bernie feels about these issues but we don’t know if his Green Lantern Ring works any better than Obama’s.

I assume she’s going to run her campaign on her own terms.

My problem with Hillary is that she talks a big game, the same way that Obama did, but I don’t know if she can actually play a good game.

At least with Sanders I know that he’s been in the trenches for a long time and he’s even pushed for things which made people uncomfortable. He’s stuck with it for a very long time too.

Elections are not just referendums—they are choices. That is true. Of course I had to vote for Obama last election (even though I had seen through his game by then) because we couldn’t allow such a crook as Romney get anywhere near the White House.

But the fact that the other choice is so awful is no excuse to allow Clinton to play this game.

Sanders’ probably works a lot better than Clinton’s or Obama’s. The reason is that Sanders has been in Congress for a very long time. While the evidence is kind of thin, Senators who have served in the Senate only a short time before becoming President often lack a lot of pull because they failed to build connections that they could pull upon. Sanders would still have to fight hard to get anything passed, but he would have more to work with than Clinton.

Something to note for those who are so sure she’s not sincere…

This woman could have gone into private industry and excelled at anything she chose to do. She has the intelligence, education and drive. Instead, she chose public service and stood in the shadows of her husband working as First Lady for eight years both in Arkansas and Washington DC…for nothing. She knows what sacrifice entails. She knows what American workers have been going through. She knows what putting her country first means.

No matter what is thrown at her, she will prevail. That is the kind of commitment and determination this nation needs from its chief executive and commander in chief. It’s what America’s workers deserve. It’s what we will demand.

If we include Hillary’s time as first lady as a sort of unpaid internship we’ve probably never had a candidate running for President with as much experience in the executive branch. I’ll never say anything negative about Bernie Sanders, I consider him a national treasure. I wish I could say the same about Bernie’s supporters towards Clinton.

Who understands economic unfairness better than a woman whose husband gets half a million dollars to make a speech? Yeah! She’s got your back!

Totally sure that Hillary Clinton will be actively talking about fairness while doing absolutely nothing about it
