Discussion: Hill Democrats Vow To Win War Against Medicare Privatization in 2017

Right on the substance, and on the politics. Have at it!

I fully expect the Dems to blow this… all the republicans have to do is peel off enough Dem votes to do so.

That’s more like it. Lead from the front. Make the news. Seize the Medicare issue. Kleptocracy next.

EDIT: “All signs suggest a fight is coming," incoming Senate Minority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said.

Doesn’t matter if the fight comes from the Rs or not. Pick a fight on this issue. “Hands off Medicare” should be one of the top two the unofficial slogan for the next two years, even if Rs do in fact keep their hands off.

Why is it I get a picture of Mr Rogers squaring off against Hulk Hogan on the mean streets of Washington?

Geaux, Bernie! Work to stiffen the spines of all Democrats in the Senate to hang tough on Medicare. My GOP senator and rep, Bill Cassidy and Garret Graves will not take a public position on the issue.

I wish the BlueDogs would just become Republicans, then the GOP would completely own any mess they create.

Go for it, Bernie! Nancy Pelosi! Chuck Schumer! We’re supporting you!!

Sources close to Trump Enterprises/Trump Transition revealed that Mr. Trump has formed a new business to manage privatized Medicare plans in anticipation of the new legislation. When reporters asked Mr. Trump why he reneged on his campaign promise to protect Medicare from cuts, he guffawed and said: “that was then, this is now; that was there, this is here.”

Bernie is like the freshman virgin on a date with the football team quarterback. He won’t realize what has happened until it’s over. I love him, but naïve thy name is Bernie.

Exactly. Dems need to be loudly aggressive for the entirety of Trump’s term and then into the next one, regardless of who’s at the top of congress or the presidency.

Support for Medicare isn’t limited to Democrats. Even half-assed Middle America trumpets have it, use it, and don’t want to lose it.

We need telegenic surrogates calling every Republican priority what it is: an effort to leave Americans holding the bag. Every law should be called the “Holding the Bag Act” from start to finish.

He’s been around for 30 years. Let Trump and Ryan feel the Bern.

Yes, I wish these democrats would make more of the reasons for not privatizing these programs, and make more of the obvious reasons the GOP wants to privatize, or eliminate them. They need to harp on it, like the GOPers do on everything, in unison.

Oh, don’t worry, there’s going to be a phase-out period or a grandfathering-in of anybody currently on Medicare in it’s current form who won’t be affected. All those older people that voted Trump are the same people who like to whine about Gen-Xers and Millenials getting “participation trophies” in their youth and are undeserving of any of the benefits they’ve had. They’re going to be in glee when they finally get to hear about the young’uns getting the shaft.

I thought that the nazi Florida Governor, Scott, had that market cornered…

“The people have paid into the systems and they should get their money back,” Pelosi said.

That is a dangerous argument to make. The Republican response can be to keep Medicare as it is for people above a certain age and destroy it for the rest of us. The truth is that people paid into Medicare to cover their parents and their children will pay for their care. The money was not saved and what people pay in does not necessarily cover what they will get out.

We must preserve Medicare for all generations. We cannot allow the Republicans to divide and conquer, paying off today’s seniors while screwing over the next generation. The argument is not that seniors must get medicare because they paid in. They must get medicare because decent nations take care of their elderly. That’s not just the right argument to make on values. It is the right strategy for brining the elderly into the coalition of the decent and protecting the elderly of every generation.
