Yes, serious fascism in America is Christian, and many of the Tea Party types yearn for such a movement, while others, such as Bachmann, would willingly change clothes to join in at the right moment. However, what’s missing in this article is the role of major right wing capitalists, the Scaife Family Foundation, the Koch brothers et al, in helping generate and sustain the movement, financially and organizationally.

“This is why virtually all Con-Cons conflate the Constitution with the Declaration of Independence, which enabled them to sneak both Natural and Divine Law (including most conspicuously a pre-natal Right to Life) into the nation’s organic governing structure.”

Liberals and radicals should rmember this the next time they think of citing Jefferson’s “all people are created equal” in support of whatever position. It doesn’t come without baggage that they may not want to identify with.

Libertarians both amuse and annoy me. I’ve never met a more naive group of people in my life, which is weird because so many of them are really smart people. But somehow they have this fetish that the free market has magical powers that can do everything right. They must not have cable tv and had to deal with those nightmare companies.

Sometimes people do things because it is the right thing to do, not because there is a profit motive. This tends to be beyond the grasp of libertarians.

Libertarians : are monopolies OK with you? If not, how do you prevent them? Are predatory business practices OK? Price gauging? Rampant pollution? Building a factory next door to your house? Do you really want for-profit companies running the sewer system and roads?

Let’s just cut through the brush here to the heart of the matter. Call them “con-cons” or the “religious right” or “libertarians,” they all share a common thread- ignorance of the Constitution and the basis of our founding. They also share a fundamental ignorance of economics and history. I know it’s not politically correct to call people stupid but after all the misinformed conclusions, the disregard of facts for ideology and the unwillingness to look at consequences, it comes down to stupidity.

Yep. Christianity is a touchstone everyone on the right can grasp, using the same language, twisted to accommodate their greed-filled cuts of the pie, paid for the same people they plan to screw over as soon as victory is assured.

/Christianity, the voice of cash and (open) carry.

Is this a “libertarian moment" because the Libertarian party could possibly get 2% of the vote rather than 1% of the vote, or because most Republicans are too embarrassed to be Republicans so they’ll call themselves libertarians while voting Republican anyway? Some moment.

Astounding as it may be, a large percentage of them are very intelligent. I can’t fathom it either, but when a person is exposed to only one side of an argument and have that declared the only proper way to conduct yourself combined with authoritarian upbringing, and you’ll likely find that they’re very similar to conspiracy theorists who hear true and verifiable facts and see them as just more of the conspiracy.

And of course, the leaders raking in the big bucks know full-well what they’re doing to their congregants/constituents/unaware co-conspirators, even if they believe a portion of their upside-down thinking.

With their own propaganda wing in Fox News and Rupert Murdoch the conniving conservatives (Con-con for short) we are on very thin ice to protect ourselves. Sadly many have given over their own will to this brain washing and until we can break the links it is going to be an uphill battle.

Con-Cons is an apt description and should rapidly replace the monikers of GOP and TP in our thinking.

There isn’t a damned thing wrong with calling stupid things stupid.

I’m pretty sure that’s half the problem in our country nowadays.

“I know it’s not politically correct to call people stupid…”

Sometimes you just have to call things as they are. These people are not only stupid, they’re jaw-droppingly “I’m surprised you can dress yourself in the morning and not shit your pants at night” stupid.

“Shrewd” was when he walked away from the table when two Dreamers came up to talk in Iowa. Or cowardly.

The title is a case of specious correlation. Instead, the two activities, 1-conservative “libertarianism” and 2-fundamentalist Christian politicking, are both results of the same right-wing non-profits laundering corporate and big donor cash for political ends.

Like many have said, this was made obvious years ago by Ron Paul’s bigotry. What’s disturbing is the implicit greed of the movement regardless of the name.

I was startled to hear a close friend tell me that he and his wife would not have voted for Obama is they had known in advance that he was going to support gay marriage.

This comes from a very intelligent person who has become very religious these past eight years.

It really came as a shock, that he would have flipped to Romney or even McCain over the word marriage being affiliated with LGBT unions.

Wow, you guys at TPM are just now waking up to this?

Typical inside-the-Beltway blindness.

They discover that the entire planet isn’t as infatuated with Ted Cruz and they’re just shocked. SHOCKED!

I suspected there was some collusion with the religious right after seeing the “religious liberty” demagogues using libertarian arguments to defend the SC Hobby Lobby decision.
Peas in the same pod, really, the kind of people who seek ways to rationalize their ideologies of selfishness and religious authoritarianism.
These aren’t thinking people and they don’t care about convincting thinking people.
They can live with coginitive dissonance…it sells well. And if it sells well enough to the voting public, they can force us to live with it too.
