Discussion: Hatch's Office Cleans Up After He Says Party 'Shot Their Wad' On O'Care Repeal

It’s like Pink Floyd was bloody psychic with their lyrics, when it came to Pencey and “Mother”…

"Mother"

Mother, do you think they’ll drop the bomb?
Mother, do you think they’ll like this song?
Mother, do you think they’ll try to break my balls?
Ooh, aah, mother, should I build the wall?

Mother, should I run for president?
Mother, should I trust the government?
Mother, will they put me in the firing line?
Ooh, aah, is it just a waste of time?

Hush now, baby, baby, don’t you cry
Mama’s gonna make all of your nightmares come true
Mama’s gonna put all of her fears into you
Mama’s gonna keep you right here under her wing
She won’t let you fly but she might let you sing
Mama’s gonna keep baby cozy and warm

Ooh, babe, ooh, babe, ooh, babe
Of course Mama’s gonna help build the wall

Mother, do you think she’s good enough? (for me?)
Mother, do you think she’s dangerous? (tell me?)
Mother, will she tear your little boy apart?
Ooh, aah, mother, will she break my heart?

Hush now, baby, baby, don’t you cry
Mama’s gonna check out all your girlfriends for you
Mama won’t let anyone dirty get through
Mama’s gonna wait up till you get in
Mama will always find out where you’ve been
Mamma’s gonna keep baby healthy and clean

Ooh, babe, ooh, babe, ooh, babe
You’ll always be a baby to me

Mother, did it need to be so high?

Yeah, it’s nice to know that Republicans can only do one thing at a time, unlike us, who can enjoy this bit of Orrin Hatch idiocy and STILL focus on Trump’s collusion with a foreign government AND the failure of the GOP’s attempts to destroy the ACA.

Holy Moroni, that’s scary…

“We’re not going back to health care,” Hatch said, referring to Republicans’ failed efforts to repeal Obamacare. “We’re in tax now. As far as I’m concerned, they shot their wad on health care and that’s the way it is. I’m sick of it.”

Political observers were quick to snicker on Twitter. But a few hours after the article was published Monday, Hatch’s office clarified exactly what the 83-year-old senator meant.

The Mormon Republican’s office said he’d been channelling the Civil War-era term for the barrier between one’s gunpowder and corresponding musket projectile.

He learned it from Strom Thurmond.

Little known fact: During the US Civil War, a musket’s projectile was commonly referred to as “jism.”

With that context, it becomes clear how appropriate it was to describe the GOP own goal…

Poor Orrin.

Shooting one’s wad has a perfectly honorable historical meaning that predates contemporary uses by decades, but saw that meaning overtaken by those contemporary uses, oh, I don’t know, 50 years ago?

I wonder if he still says “niggardly” too.

I wonder what The Lord tastes like? I figure something like a combination of cotton candy, General Foods International Coffee, and Republican tears.
And dontcha love that stylish do on the Missionary Matriarch? “The higher the hair, the closer to Jesus!”

In today’s hyper-sexualized culture, of course this seems lame. But way back when, say 40 years ago, this was actually a legitimate thing to say and people did say it all the time in polite conversation. And if you think about it, his use of the classic interpretation of it better fits his meaning. Republicans did, repeatedly, let off their weapons before they were properly loaded.
