Discussion: Harris Defends Criminal Justice Record, Says She's Worked To 'Reform' System

Did Tapper ask Harris about anything else?

There’s also the Columbia Review of Journalism Review.

Note the sparse attention given to policy.

I understand the instinct to think that if she were simply to explain it was a mistake, all would move on. But I think the dialogue from then on would be, ā€œHarris, though a minority herself and despite already admitting her role in a failed policy punitive to minorities, has found it difficult to gain traction in the race. Her inability to move past the controversy was on display again today on the trail when … (insert random tangential or not even remotely related situation).ā€

It’s the same template which allowed the ā€œbut her emailsā€ meme to dominate the 2016 election while unapologetically racist, deceitful and ignorant Trump waltzed around the country throwing gasoline on the flames of every perceived grievance of the past half century.

Yes, and the reasons are fairly obvious.

I’m sure you could probably find similar findings in the run up to the Iraq War after Bush the Lesser dismissed UN inspectors from looking for WMDs and just declared they were there. Our press went into full battle mode to show the arsenal of democracy, with all our newest gadgets to run our 3 week war that ended up costing us trillions in blood and treasure, hundreds of thousands of lives, civilian and military, that resulted in over 9 years of a misguided and pre-emptive clusterfuck. They never learn. Speaking truth to power is a joke, unless there’s a Democrat in office. Kowtowing to Republicans has become the norm.

Harris’ criminal justice record is a strength for her. She has been leaning into it with due deference to not come across as arrogant. But her positions are popular with suburban voters.

It’s pretty clear to me that Harris won’t win the nomination. She’s not very inspiring and her record makes her appear mean. Whether she deserves that image or not is immaterial. Elections are about appearance, and hers isn’t what it takes right now to get the nomination.

That said, I can’t imagine yet which of the two dozen candidates we have to choose from will fit that bill.

My hot take: Almost all Democrats want to beat Trump. I very much doubt that Harris’ minor dust up with Jake Tapper and her policy on truancy in California schools is going to be a deciding factor should she become the nominee. These little tidbits of ā€œvenial sinā€ are for the most part only important as taunting points for the fanboys and fangirls of the partisan twitter brigades.

That said, Harris should own her policy and display it proudly.

Is that what won tRump the Pres*dency? Because if it is, I sure missed that part.
Maybe people just made orange the color of year in 2016…Yeah, that was it.

Blanket summary statements of this kind are unrealistic and unhelpful.

Her views on cj and her policies are popular except from the noisy left. She has validation from the voters. It hasn’t hurt her in the polling as she is clearly one of the top 4-5 candidates in this race with room to grow.

Even more unhelpful as a statement.

Absolutely

Interesting data. The chart shows Trump and Clinton getting the same negative vs. positive coverage regarding fitness for office… Let that sink in. Trump with his lifetime of tax fraud, stiffing contractors, divorces, failure to release tax returns, xenophobic rhetoric and questionable business contacts with Russia getting the same as Clinton with her 30 year tax release, access to her senate and SOS information, and the silliest, stupidest contrived issue of where she stored her emails (after she gave her hard drives to the FBI for investigation). Talk about evidence of colossal media incompetence.

Do we trust Tapper or any other cable or network news reporter to do their job? Is this kind of failure better or worse than no news coverage at all?

There’s no coherence to the attacks on Harris’ record. She’s a cop. Then she’s not a tough enough cop. No need for Kamala to apologize for a thing. The arguments from the left are nothing more than bad faith attempts to drive a wedge between her and black voters. That’s all it is.

And she is not likable, either. /s

If only there were some way to determine what the voters of a given party actually felt or wanted in a candidate, without merely asserting such a position for them. What might we call such a thing? Perhaps a primary?

As the author of the study put it:

ā€œWere the allegations surrounding Clinton of the same order of magnitude as those surrounding Trump?ā€ asks [the author]. ā€œIt’s a question that political reporters made no serious effort to answer during the 2016 campaign.ā€

Is anybody in this discussion a woman or a person of color? Just wondering.
