If the stock market continues to slide, ignoring this story won’t be possible. However, you want to know who is paying very close attention? Every Dem campaign operative/consultant worth their salt. This will be more material for the fall campaign commercials, and the ads almost literally write themselves. These will be locked and loaded for September/October (and will be refreshed as more pain comes from this idiotic trade war).

I hope the thousands of Harley-Davidson workers who voted for Trump and will now lose their jobs figure out who to blame for it.

I don’t blame Harley-Davidson. If they are telling the truth they have made a rational decision based on the current tariff situation. I would suggest, however, that we investigate the reasons behind the closure of their Kansas City plant. I think it predated the new tariffs. I might be wrong.

I glimpsed some interview today where Corker, of all people, was basically saying that the tariffs are a recipe for corruption:desperate companies will pay Trump to buy themselves an exemption. This should be a big story to watch carefully.

The core Harley demographic in the U.S. corresponds pretty closely to the core Trump demographic – late-middle-aged-to-elderly upper-middle-class-to-lower-upper-class suburban white guys for whom James Dean (not the porn star) is an important cultural touchstone. I’ve always thought of them as “Hell’s Chiropractors.” They’re basically Wild One-LARPing weekend warriors who spend the their days on the couch with Rushbo and BillO in their polos and khakis when they’re not out on the hog. I wonder who’ll even buy Harleys here after they die off? Of course, they’ll be made and mostly-assembled entirely overseas soon, with some cost-efficient domestic fuckery at the end of the supply chain to get around Trump’s tariffs…

No worries, they can always move to California. We still have lots of jobs for immigrants - picking fruit, cutting grass, I hear construction pays pretty well (but we are going into summer, so the roofing work’s going to be a bitch). But, hey - MAGA!

Instead, Harley used the tax bonus money to structure the closing of the MO plant (1000 jobs), move those operations to York PA for temp workers and to Thailand, increase dividends, and buyback $700M of stocks. Now, thanks to tariffs, more thousands of jobs will be lost as operations move to EU.
Harley execs are laughing all the way to the banks. Union guys and gals ain’t laughing anymore- even if they voted for Trump. You get what you pay for.
