Discussion: Hagel Seen As 'Weak Link, Publicly' On Obama's National Security Team

Discussion for article #230507

Stop appointing Rs to SecDef. There’s a start!

Yeah, who wants a guy who is anti-war and wants to cut the defense budget, what stupid ideas those are.

Typical Republicant.

Obama’s whole plan to “reach across the aisle in bi-partisanship” has only resulted in getting his hand cut off every time bu the hate-filled rethugs. And Hagel is still one of them.

I imagine the Obama Administration is deeply frustrated by Hagel’s inability to keep his complaints to himself.

Absurd idea.

This is a bit off-topic (or is it?) but that gash in Hagel’s cheek looks a lot worse than some kitchen cabinet accident. Unless, of course, someone took the cabinet off its hinges and drove it into Hagel’s face like a chisel.

This was not your typical R.

Yeah, I noticed that too. It looks like someone came at him with straight razor.

Seems to me that Hagel himself was the starting point for the “lack of discipline.” I just cringed when I heard him make that remark about IS being the greatest existential threat to the US. I mean, really. I can only assume that the WH must have flipped at that gaffe.

OK, so if Hagel was usually the one who would be warning against reacting to what Clemons called “the emotional moment” on the crises in Syria and Ukraine, etc., then why was he out there calling ISIS a huge existential threat to the US?

I don’t see any need for nuance. He was the token Republican, detested by his party, who no longer filled a need.

Curiously, the CEO of United Technologies stepped down today unexpectedly. They are a huge defense contractor.

Yes. Not consistent with Clemons’ evaluation of the situation.

Yeah. How dare people complain when the bus tire marks are still on their faces.

This is an administration that abhors leaks, and will send to jail those who report leaks, except when it likes the leaks. What a bunch of phonies.

So assuming this version is pretty much correct, we have a Republican SecDef fired because he was too dovish and long-view for a weak-minded and undisciplined Democratic administration that’s letting Fox News and ISIS. bully it into Bushian impulsivity and hawkish dumbassery? Depressing, and kind of ironic, but it wouldn’t surprise me.

Hagel was a combat soldier, a squad-leading Sergeant who was wounded twice in Vietnam. He’d seen his fill of war and while not being a pacifist, wasn’t in a hurry to go picking fights…which is probably why he’s on the outs in DC.

The Establishment wants warmongers.

I respect Hagel far more than I will ever respect some chickenhawk file-cabinet warrior like Miss Lindsey of the Fightin’ JAGs.

I still respect Lindsey, who at least signed up, more than warmongers like Cheney who wouldn’t even risk that…

Bullshit.

That’s an awfully big assumption on your part.
