Discussion: Guys, The New 'Star Wars' Trailer Is Here -- Watch It (VIDEO)

Discussion for article #230626

That trailer…and the fact that Lucas has been utterly banished from the franchise actually has me excited to see the film.

Everyone’s raving about it, but the teaser left me rather underwhelmed. I guess they figure a lightsaber and a shot of the Millennium Falcon is all it takes to get us salivating. I’ll certainly see it; as has already been noted, the lack of George Lucas involvement is the biggest draw for me.

For my money, BTW, here’s the best teaser ever:

I’d love to get a Delorean tricked out as that time machine and then get a ticket going 88 in a 65. I’d frame the ticket.

I’ve been worried about the story up until now. If that is the best that ā€œThe Empireā€ can do for a teaser trailer, I’m no longer worried.
I’m outright scared!

Posting the trailer here? Are you kidding? Does TPM really need the clicks that badly?

Well, you did click on it.

I hope they blow up a lot of hardware and trot out gratuitously cute little robots.

Wait! I meant to say, I hope they blow up gratuitously cute robots and trot out a lot of hardware.

I’m probably WAY too excited about this.

The fact that it’s at least partly shot on real sets, instead of entirely on green screen like the prequels were, is a sign that at least it can’t be too horrible.

I dunno, this one is pretty iconic.

Huey Lewis and the News.

I couldn’t comment on it WITHOUT clicking on it, you dope.

Is it a bad sign that for the first half of it I wasn’t sure if it wasn’t a parody of a Star Wars trailer?

ā€œā€¦2015ā€¦ā€

And the next year, we take Congress away from the Dark Overlords.

I think I’m decidedly underwhelmed.

The stormtrooper helmets seemed needlessly updated w/LED effects. This is a minor thing.
The lightsaber quillons (because we don’t get to see the end of the blade itself once it’s extended) waver and move like flame, not like a lightsaber. This is a minor thing.
The X-Wing pilot’s flight helmet is slimmed down and streamlined - an odd choice for a setting where the technology of flight helmets has been established for some 4000+ years. This is also a minor thing.
The W-Wings themselves appear to have been redesigned to be sleeker, streamlined, and less ā€˜industrial’, (the term used by the original modeling team for the design aesthetic) as does the Falcon. On its own, another minor thing.

But all of these minor things add up to what looks like a disregard for the visual aesthetic of Star Wars. This isn’t a reboot. This isn’t the time to ā€˜re-imagine’ how things look. This is a sequel, and one where the director and production house are trying to restore fan confidence in the series.

It’s not a good way to start.

I get where you’re coming from–there’s definitely a darker and sharper tone to the images (what’s a ā€œW-Wingā€, btw? Only X-wings are shown). We’ll see.

My skepticism toward the film comes from the fact that J J Abrams is directing. Star Trek was an absolute mess (I have not seen the sequel). He does get big points in my book for wearing an ā€œInfocomā€ T-shirt, however.
