Discussion for article #237971
The religious backing of racism and bans on interracial marriage were well established. Cruz really should try reading up on his history, but that would require actually having to deal with reality.
That was a grilling? Did she ask him what the Civil War had to do with interracial marriage? I think he is still tartare.
Hate is one thing. Trying to hide behind Jesus to get away with it is just pathetic.
They’re just having fun with him now—
This is so insincere. Yes, we fought that bloody civil war but it was 100 years later that interracial marriage was illegal in many states and people like you and Harry Truman said that was because of religious reason.
Just like people like you are opposing same sex marriage because of religious reasons.
And by the way, we fought a bloody civil war that the south lost yet they still get to fly that flag, don’t they?
Yes, it’s pathetic but also very effective and common.
This shouldn’t be difficult. The Loving decision nullified state marriage rules in 1967. Do the Republican candidates for president believe that Loving was wrongly decided? Because either SCOTUS has the power to tell states what marriage is, or it doesn’t.
Ask that.
“There’s no religious backing for that,” Cruz responded.
No?
“Shall I tell you the law of God in regard to the African race? If the white man who belongs to the chosen seed mixes his blood with the seed of Cain, the penalty, under the law of God, is death on the spot. This will always be so.” (Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, Vol.10, p.109)
I wish she had asked Cruz who he thinks should determine the validity of a religious belief.
Guthrie forgot that much like Jeb!, Carnival Cruz is a “master-debater” [sic].
And…? Just what did this “journalist” give us that’s new?
This is so insincere.
I think you can say that about anything that comes out of Cruz’s mouth.
The astonishing lying about all things historical and legal that comes out of this man’s mouth…
Please! Shoot me in the face the next time some radio hate talker or conservo pundit brags on his ( or Jindal’s) book smarts and academic pedigree.
Don’t know the history of your adopted country very well teddie.
Religious zealots use their bybuls to back their racism. They used “religion” to ban interracial marriages, until the SCOTUS put a stop to it.
Go back to Canada fool.
I am sure there are several Billy Graham, Oral Roberts and Jerry Fallwell quotes that can be added as well.
As much as as the other journalists who gave us Santorum’s and Paul’s remarks, bullshit to further their pathetic and losing campaigns…
"There’s no religious backing for that," Cruz responded.
Perhaps this ill-informed bigot thinks the Curse of Ham rationale for racism had something to do with leaving it in the oven too long on Easter Sunday instead.
Amen!
So there was no religious backing opposing interracial marriage? That would have come as a shock to the trial judge in Loving v Virginia , Leon M. Bazile, who wrote in the original decision:
Almighty God created the races white, black, yellow, malay and red, and He placed them on separate continents. And but for the interference with His arrangement there would be no cause for such marriages. The fact that he separated the races shows that He did not intend for the races to mix.
