Discussion: Gretchen Carlson Heaps Praise On Husband's Client Derek Jeter

Discussion for article #227887

I’m no fan of Fox News, and there certainly may be a conflict of interest here. However, she disclosed that conflict, and, as for her comments about Derek Jeter, if she’s right then she’s right.

Someone should tell the writer that the former Vikings QB is Fran Tarkenton—NOT “Frank.”

I wonder whether some other considerations of a personal nature – other than the obvious conflict related to the husband’s talent agency – were also involved?

Now we know how Carlson got her job.

No we don’t. She seems to be a very assertive professional in her own right. That her husband is a powerful sports agent doesn’t mean he got her the job. You are being very sexist.

Several years ago when the Diamondbacks were playing the Yankees in the World Series (2001) Jeter was at the plate and a pitch gently grazed his left jersey sleeve but did not contact him in any meaningful way. He went down like a ton 'o bricks and got sent to 1st base. Instantly my wife nicknamed him “Jeter the cheater”. And in our house the name has remained.

I’m disappointed. I had imagined that Ms. Carlson was a professional liar because of her desire to make a lot of money, no matter how corrosive the enterprise to her integrity and soul. Now that I know her husband’s filthy rich already, I gotta think that lies simply because she likes to.

When I was growing up this sort of behavior was called “self-dealing.”

Ethics? What are ethics?

Isn’t it Frank Tarkleton?

Someone on FOX has a conflict of interest? I can’t believe it…

when she said pigtails, did she use two Gs?

Hell, in the NBA they have a full semester course on doing this. Soon it’ll be an Academy Award category.

But the official rule in baseball is that if the ball hits the batter or any part of his uniform, he gets a walk. No cheating involved.

Maybe there was no cheating. I saw the pitch and the subsequent slow-motion replay. Jeter played the flopper quite well dropping and writhing like his arm was broken. The ball flicked past the cuff of his 3/4 sleeve jersey and just barely touched it. He was awarded 1st base and by the time he got to the bag he had miraculously recovered.
Ergo “Jeter the cheater.”

Ethics are for the little people.

No. It’s Tran Frankenton.

Fuck Jeter. I’m sick of hearing about his declining ass, and the gushing praise like he’s some kind of hero. I’ll be glad when he’s done and I don’t have to see or hear about the self-serving tributes.

“…good role models off the playing field”
Oh the irony of Gretchen Carlson. This is the same woman who, when she was starting out as a clueless reporter (and she was indeed clueless) in Richmond, VA, had an affair with the ABC affiliate news anchor (Kevin McGraw I think), thereby destroying a family that included two young children. Both were gone from the local airwaves as soon as the story broke.

Better the praise for Jeter than the instant forgiveness given to players who cheated like Ryan Braun but who have no contrition until their lawyer writes a “statement” of fake apology…
