âI think that you donât have any more trouble with what Trump said than when Sotomayor said that â when she was found saying in speeches that, quote, âa wise Latina woman with the richness of her experience would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male,ââ Grassley said. âI donât hear any criticism of that sort of comment by as justice of the Supreme Court.â
Overall, seven of 10 Americans (71 percent) â think judges should âonly interpret the lawâ and not take into account their own personal views and experiences. A much smaller number (26 percent) think judges should take their own personal views and experiences into account when interpreting the law.
Even so, most people (67 percent) do not think the remarks should disqualify Sotomayor from serving on the court, including majorities of Democrats (83 percent), Republicans (51 percent) and independents (66 percent).
