Discussion: Grassley Attempts To Clarify His Position On SCOTUS Nominees

All I can say to this is, “Dooneese Maharelle for the Supreme Court!” (hey, she could do far less damage than any Republican selection - since she doesn’t even exist!)

Cirque de Soulless!

The only time this stupid fucker ever “thought things through” was when he had his last bowel movement in 1983.
And yes, I made a poo joke. Fucking crucify me.

Yes. It’s also why Republicans get misty-eyed and erectile when you whisper the name “Roger Taney” in their ears.

Hey, I have no idea how many “balls in the air” there are, but I sure as hell know whose balls I’d love to kick!

“History has proven the wisdom of having the President place judges with the support of the majority of the Senate. That process ensures balance on the court between judges placed by Republican Presidents and those placed by Democrat Presidents. The current obstruction led by Senate Democratic leaders threatens that balance. It’s time to make sure all judges receive a fair vote on the Senate floor.” [Grassley.Senate.gov, “Talking Judges to Death,” 5/8/05]

"I wouldn’t make any prognostication on anything about the future because there’s so many balls in the air when those things are considered," he said at the time.

What he meant…There are so many balls in paymasters’ hands…

Link not working.

when responding to the Des Moines Register, he "didn’t have a chance to think

Only then???

I’ve also heard her name mentioned. It seems the easy play for the administration is going with a moderate then watch the GOP hang itself.

…“it’s been standard practice over the last nearly 80 years that Supreme Court nominees are not nominated and confirmed during a presidential election year,” -Grassely-

One can expect pundits and politicians to play fast and loose with facts minus context. But when a news source fails to provide that context, it is disconcerting.

The Senate confirmed Anthony Kennedy on Feb. 4, 1988. That was about 28 years ago – not 80.

While the statement may be technically true – Ronald Reagan nominated Kennedy in November of 1987 to replace Justice Lewis Powell who retired that year - I’m sure that if Scalia had died suddenly in November 2015, we’d still be seeing the same Republican obstruction and refusal to do their duty as we see today.

Okay, he has now officially confirmed what I have long guessed, and that is, he is senile.

I am not sure how Grassley would hurt himself more… Trying to think things through or tossing his balls in the air.

I think it was Rubio who argued exactly that.

here’s the trip up that no one wants to address (unless they are pressed or looking for straw men): Reagan’s first choice was Robert Bork.

The second choice was Ginsberg, but he didn’t make it on account of him smoking weed with his students.

If Kennedy had failed to get a hearing…

Thank you! They’re all so bad that they tend to morph into a single ugly, hateful, blabbering beast.

Obama’s constitutional duty is to nominate. The Senate’s constitutional duty is to determine if the candidate is qualified. If said candidate is qualified, the Senate’s duty is to FUCKING CONFIRM.

Holding a show hearing ain’t gonna cut it. If Obama nominates a guy who was, say, confirmed 97-0 by the Senate, their fucking duty is to CONFIRM the motherfucker.

If they didn’t want Obama choosing the nomination, they should have beaten him in 2012 instead of getting curb-stomped by 5 million votes.

Farmer Grassley is not only stupid, he’s a whining hypocrite.

"During a 2008 Senate Republican Conference hearing on “removing politics from the judicial confirmation process,” Grassley expressed his displeasure with what he called “unjustified slowness” of the confirmation process, and the Senate Democrats whom he felt were holding up President George W. Bush’s court appointments for partisan reasons.
“Unfortunately, the Democrats have been employing some fast and fancy footwork to avoid their Constitutional responsibility…” Grassley said during the meeting, adding that “Democratic leadership is putting partisan advantage ahead of the health of our judicial system.”
