Is “riled up” another way of saying “melting down”?
Apparently, DenIal is a river in Pennsylvania, too…
What’s the basis on which they defend the old map, with it’s bizarrely shaped districts? I haven’t seen an argument other than “democrats are partisan” in defense of the old districts, and the new districts were drawn by a third party outside the state
That reminds me of a joke I heard many years ago:
Question: Why did Minnie Mouse leave Mickey?
Answer: Because he was fucking goofy.
The vague nature of cartoon character gender identity notwithstanding, that is a more progressive version of that joke than I heard.
With control of the U.S. House on the line in November, Trump urged Republicans to challenge the new map of Pennsylvania’s 18 congressional districts all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, if necessary.
Yeah, you try that. The Constitution merely says how the number of representatives per state is calculated and that state legislatures are responsible for deciding how state representatives are elected. “District” does not appear in the relevant articles of the Constitution. A state could have a state-wide election and just take the top 10 finishers if it wanted. Nope nopity nope nope. See whiteboar’s reply.
It therefore falls to the PA state constitution to describe how PA will elect its representatives and, in the case of any disagreement about how that process is carried out, it is the PA Supreme Court who decides.
Thinking that the USC would get involved in what is clearly a state-level election issue is absurd. It would be like asking them to intervene in a legal state-level vote recount and them just delcaring a winner in spite of…
…oh. Right. Well, fingers crossed and all that.
That’s right PA Republicans follow your leader right over that cliff. After all their dear leader is doing so well for himself, what could go wrong?
I cannot wait for Trump’s Tweets on the matter to be introduced in court, just like they were for the Muslim ban.
Keep fucking that chicken, guys!
Court takes away Republicans’ gerrymandered electoral “leg up.” GOP is hopping mad.
Just out of extremely perverse curiosity, whatever happened to our lovely Kellyanne Conjob?
Did she:
- Lawyer Up?
- Flee the country?
- Spend a naughty weekend, spilling the beans to Mr. Mueller?
- Finishing up her tell-all book on the Donnie circus?
Any answer will do.
““Your Original was correct! Don’t let the Dems take elections away from you so that they can raise taxes & waste money!” Trump tweeted.”
Isn’t the President supposed to take care that the laws are faithfully executed? It may be at a state level rather than national, but, hey, it’s a dig at the rule of law
But Costello lashed out at the state Supreme Court, saying the justices’ map was politically motivated, their map-making process was politically corrupt and that state lawmakers should consider impeaching them.
Stunning… just stunning projection.
Someone needs to re-arrange this guys grey matter for him.
Because fairness is a partisan concept. Can’t cheat, can’t win: new GOP motto.
“Why cheating’s abhorrent, reviled!”
Up to 11 the outrage is dialed
They’ll fight at Trump’s urging
This impurity purging -
Are you sure someone else isn’t riled?
"Urged on by President Donald Trump…"
….their real ball and chain come election time.
It is truly stunning that the PA Republicans are calling a map drawn to more closely resemble the political landscape political, but their partisan hack job is just fine. Not a surprise, as the Republicans are just on a power grab and not interested in the rule of law or fair elections, both things which are fundamental to what this country stands for and was founded upon. They really should be ashamed though, and hopefully they continue to bark up this tree and make bigger fools of themselves…odds are if they do they will get run out of office even harder.
Their reaction is why Democrats just have to give up playing these games…yes, it’s a loss of power advantage, but following the principles of our nation is a winning stance to take, and being the party that wants everyone to have a fair chance at voting and electing the people they want is where the Democrats should be. Let the Republicans cut their own throat being the party that steals and cheats, that will just draw more attention to how their policies, like their voting agenda, is only geared towards the wealthy and keeping power. They lose if they try to hold that hill.
It’s an AP story, so of course you don’t get much other than republican talking points. One paragraph about how some people considered the previous map gerrymandered, nothing about how this map might produce only a small republican majority from a majority-democrat vote.
Its not going to be likely the SCOTUS will intervene since the same thing happened in FL (the court had to draw the districts) and they stayed out of that one.
More AP BS. Nowhere does the article get to the heart of this - the state Supreme Court determined the old map was not just biased but unconstitutional, and that noted liberal US Supreme Court Justice Sam Alito turned down an appeal by the GOP because the ruling was based on state constitution, which is more specific than the US constitution because state’s control their elections. The map was drawn by a non-partisan third party at the court’s direction based on the court’s interpretation of the state constitution, which is what that court does. All the focus on GOP whining ignores the facts, typical for AO reporting. And the 18th, the special election is necessary due to another GOP harasser, and will be the current district. The whole article has as much value as taking Trump’s tweet seriously. What a joke.
