Discussion: GOPers Are Upset That Dems Have Cut 'So Help Me God' From Swearing In Oath

If I hear one more stranger say after I make a purchase almost anywhere “Thank you and have a blessed day” I’m going to strangle them.

Protecting a flag is a bit different than what i had in mind which was not wearing a flag as a garment or jewelry. And this was only from my own personal point of view. I am not demanding anyone change their own view of this.

“one Republican reportedly kept bringing a plastic bottle anyway.”

Like a petulant child. “You can’t tell me what to do!!! You’re not the boss of me!!!” And mostly driven by the identity of who he perceived was telling him what to do and why.

“I am a sinner, I make mistakes every single day, but I do think that we could use a little more of God, not less,” said Rep. Garret Graves (R-LA).

Fuck You Hypocrite

Matthew 6:5

" And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites
are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and
in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men.
Verily I say unto you, They have their reward."

In this verse Jesus condemns as hypocrites those who make an ostentatious display of praying. As with Matthew 6:2 this verse states that for those who pray to be seen by others, their only reward will be the adulation of their peers. Similarly, Luke 18:9-14 condemns a Pharisee who seeks out the most prominent location in the Temple to pray.

Do you like to see big ones flapping off the back of a large pickup?
Just saw one of those today, the first in a long while. I bet they think it makes them so patriotic. Not a flag waver here and I really dislike people using it to proclaim how american they are.

I had no idea they’d done this! Bravo!!! I’m actually stunned, but credit to the Dems.

And to the GOP: keep using those fossil fuel products - when the resource wars start due to global warming, you’ll be able to really test your faith!

Please pass the Jesus water. :smirk:

Wine.

Trust me. This guy is ALREADY “in the closet”.

Matthew 6:4 - straight from Jesus’s lips to his followers:
"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. "

Oh, so that’s why they’re upset about losing their plastic bottles. It all makes sense now. :smirk:

Umm, no. Reference to God was made in the original version of 1893. The original first verse was as follows:

O beautiful for halcyon skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the enameled plain!
America! America!
God shed His grace on thee,
Till souls wax fair as earth and air
And music-hearted sea!

Amended versions (by Bates herself) were published in 1904 (in The Boston Evening Transcript) and in 1913, which is the same one that is sung today. (And is, in my opinion, a great improvement on the 1893 original. “Enameled plain”? Really??)

Bates had originally titled the poem “Pike’s Peak” (the inspiration for the “purple mountain majesties” phrase), but the title was changed to "America’ when it was first published, in the Fourth of July edition of the church publication The Congregationalist in 1895. It was published in 1910 with a tune written by Samuel A. Ward in 1882 (first published in 1892 for his hymn “O Mother dear, Jerusalem”) under the title “America the Beautiful.”

it’s not what I would do, but I don’t have a problem with it. I think it’s far odder to hang a golden bejeweled instrument of torture around your neck to honor a poor man who was nailed to one.

L. Ron Hubbard founded Scientology.

I don’t think the government should be in the business of deciding what is or isn’t a “genuine religion”. To my eyes, most televangelists wouldn’t pass muster.

I read the beginning of the Book of Mormon once. Tolkien’s origin story is much better.

Which is a good argument for why granting tax exemptions to churches is problematic.

I’m not all that crazy about pledging allegiance to a flag in the first place. Pledging allegiance to the Constitution would make a whole lot more sense.

It seems strange to me that Republicans are so determined to invoke Divine Retribution that they have every reason to hope does not actually exist, or at least never gets applied to them personally.

I don’t know that I have ever smelled cilantro, but to me it tastes like soap. One reason I like the restaurant chain “Mexico” is that they serve their tortilla chips not only with the traditional red salsa that has cilantro, but also with a white salsa that is slightly spicy-hot, and has NO CILANTRO.

They say this:

I am a sinner, I make mistakes every single day, but I do think that we could use a little more of God, not less,” said Rep. Garret Graves

I think God said we should tie you in a bag of rocks and throw you in a river, Rep. Graves. Is that enough God for us?
