He is up for re-election in 2016 so being forced to sound reasonable now might be his only hope if he doesn’t get primaried.

Illinois does not have a large Tea Party presence outside of pockets in the southern part of the state. But, then again, I cannot explain my representative Rodney Davis (who acts like one).

I beg to differ. There are no reasonable repubs left. This guy just wants to cut losses. On this one item. The key for real progress in governing for the republicans would be to … ahem … compromise. The teajihadists won’t as an article of faith in their opposition. Neither will a fair percentage of the non tea folk on the right (out of fear) And likely there are one or two on the left that won’t for their own reasons. Compromise is the grease that makes our 2 party system function. Without it we have the gridlock we all see. And the partisanship that develops as a result.
Maybe it’s my cynicism shining thru …

Agreed. I just think he knows another government shutdown, whether it’s the entire government or a particular agency, isn’t going to play well back at home. He’s got to know he’s already on thin ice as a teabagger in a fairly liberal state, the president’s home state and the likely Democratic nominee’s home state as well. Plus, he must realize that a poorly designed website isn’t going to save them this time.

Oh come on. Mark Kirk is much more of a mainstream fiscal conservative than a TP firebrand. He’s known as a decent guy whom everyone could work with if he didn’t have insane friends.
I do agree that he’s in trouble in Illinois. Their new governor is going to tick off a LOT of people there and, combined with the Presidential year, it is going to make Kirk’s run a hard one.
