Discussion: GOP Pollster: GOP Nominee Must Have An ACA Alternative In 2016

The best they will come up with is expanded HSAs and expensive catastrophic plans.

The plan already in place is the GOP plan just admit it and get over it.

this is nuts. The GOP has had five years to come up with a plan. Now they are going to come up with an ACA alternativeā€¦ in an election seasonā€¦ that will not include an individual mandate. You simply cannot have private health insurance that grants coverage with no regard to pre-existing conditions, that does not have an individual mandate. IT. WILL. NOT. WORK.

We already know what the contours of any GOP plan would be, and all of them are meant to check off items on the list of conservative dogma or accomplish Republican strategy goals rather than to actually create a workable alternative to ACA. Tort ā€œreformā€ which of course will not lead to any meaningful reduction in premiums. Some sort of tax credit or voucher, which may or may not cover your insurance needs. Allowing across-state-lines-competition, which will create a race to the bottom as shady and even established insurers move to states that promise lax enforcement in return for locating there. It will be a Rube Goldberg that will make ACA look straightforward by comparison.

The only question is how they will sell this mess to gullible voters.

The plan should start with eliminating costly restrictions. Remove the prohibition on drug re-importation. Itā€™s ludicrous that that most expensive place to buy American-made drugs is in America.

Allow people to join groups in other states, thereby allowing them to purchase from whichever state gives them the deal they like the best.

Create a standard template for the differences between various insurance plans, and require every company that wants to sell cross state lines to have an easily accessible web app to confirm if a doctor is or is not in network. Even better, create a national database of providers so people can easily see what insurance doctors near them accept.

Require every insurance company that wants to be listed in the database to use simple, easily understood, industry-wide billing codes for XYZ% of line items (thinking something like 75-80% - and obviously this requirement has to phase in over time)

Provide catastrophic coverage options and HSA-compatible plans to reduce the price of insurance.

Eliminate the mandates. Keep some level of subsidies for people who want insurance but canā€™t afford it.
