Discussion: Glenn Beck Settles Lawsuit With Boston Bombing Victim He Named As Suspect

Lotā€™s of RWNJ cash outlays and embarrassment lately. Good.

Trump: Beck is a traitor as he is arming The Terrorists.

Last month, Saris had ordered Beck to reveal his confidential sources used in the Boston bombing reporting.

Once that happened, I think it was pretty much guaranteed that Beck was going to have to cough up a big check. How big a check, Glenn?

(whimper, sniffle, sniffle) NO COMMENT! (sob!)

Getting stroked a check with several zeros in it lessens the disappointment of being denied punitive damages.

Beck settled because there WERE NO CONFIDENTIAL SOURCES. In fact, there were no sources at all!
They just saw a picture of a ā€œSemitic Guyā€ near the bombing and labeled him a terrorist, then doubled-down when called on it. They thought they could get away with it, they were wrong.

Which implies that it must have been a pretty hefty settlement, assuming Alharbiā€™s lawyers are even minimally competent. Beckā€™s accusations, even after Alharbi was publicly cleared by the US, permanently damaged Alharbiā€™s reputation and ability to work or conduct business, in addition to permanently putting him at increased risk of violence - especially since the settlement lets Beck get away without admitting fault or wrong-doing.

That leaves Alharbi in the position of needing both a lifelong income stream and enough money to pay for enhanced security and any potential medical fees from violence directed at him or his family - plus of course another 50% for the legal fees (which would be 1/3 of the settlement atter the legal fees are added in, for people trying to work out the math on that).

If Alharbiā€™s lawyers settled for anything less than something in the tens of millions of dollars range, theyā€™re incompetent.

I wish for once they wouldnā€™t settle out of court and this thing of denying any wrong doing crap I would have loved to se him drug into a court to defend his indefensible bullshit

Well, perhaps you are right. But often when the terms and $$ of the settlement are kept confidential, they are not in the tens of millions, perhaps one to three millions, which, I have to admit, leaves a good chunk of cash for the lawyers, from 3 to 9 hundred thou.

Beck may not be very rich these days. He doenā€™t have any national TV exposure at all, which is the way it should be.

Too bad the hipster tech billionaires donā€™t want to pursue this one in court.

ā€œA statement from both parties said that no party ā€œhas admitted any fault, wrongdoing, or responsibility as part of the settlement.ā€ā€

Thereā€™s no way I would have settled with those terms. Beck and the companies should have been forced to admit they were wrong, or lied.

I gotta leave. I can barely read the stories with that ad Josh has up in the middle of them.

Beck did not pay a penny. His Insurance Company is the one that pays.
Iā€™d like to see how much his rates go up after this (or if he can even GET liability insurance anymore.)

I agree entirely. Where is the party of personal responsibility?

My guess is that there was no ā€˜confidential sourceā€™ to reveal and once Beck lost that fight the only question left was how much $$$$. Without a source to point to, Beck had no defense and faced the possibility of significant punitive damages.

Confidentiality and no admissions of fault are routine.

I will place the over/under on the settlement at $10M?

Get Ad Block plus to filter out advertisements in web pages like these. I neither see nor hear any of those.

Last month, Saris had ordered Beck to reveal his confidential sources used in the Boston bombing reporting. Beck and his lawyers defied the order, saying that doing so would threaten the lives of their sources.

Which totally makes sense. Since ā€œsourcesā€ = a story he pulled out of his ass, his ass was certainly on the line if he revealed 'em.

ā€¦or a Prime subscription. As a TPM follower since 2002 I think Josh deserves my support.

As @khaaannn and maybe others have pointed out, the only thing to feel good about is that the innocent victim has been made whole (we hope). The only pain thatā€™s being felt is by his liability insurance provider.

Thereā€™s no karmic blowback at Beck. Heā€™s as rich today as he was yesterday, heā€™s as apologetic today as he was yesterday, and heā€™s as employable today as he was yesterday.

The only price heā€™ll personally pay is a higher liability insurance premium going forward, and thatā€™s a rounding error in the amount of money he can command if he wants to stay in front of the cameras. (And even thatā€™s not really his expense; itā€™s on the company that hires him, even if itā€™s his own company.)

I canā€™t afford it.
