I believe Ms. Merkel has taken up the fallen banner of liberal democracies to preserve the impetus of the cause with the hope of one day restoring it to a righteous POTUS who will once again lead the progressive nations of the world after having miserably failed in it’s solemn duty for four years. This is my hope.

Once in a while I feel like we’ve seen the worst but then something comes along that is worse. I don’t know if tRump has a bottom, maybe he’ll start putting immigrant children on pikes at the border?
And prognosticators says that there is not a democrat who can beat him in 2020… I’d vote for a blue stick if it comes to that.

Trump, the alt-right, the Republican Party, the Federalist Society, the conservative movement… all argue for discrimination and separation, for nationalism, for distinguishing the USA from every other country.
Well, under Trump and the Republicans, Putin is openly mocking us (without response), the Saudi Prince Murderer is waiting for Donald to provide him an alibi, North Korea toys with our diplomats, China is buzzing our troops, and Donald…? …Donald is audience testing “horseface”.
Sounds like American conservatives are solely lacking in rugged individualism, unlike the German people.

The chances of a two-term Trump presidency remain significant. I came away from a recent stay in purple-state Colorado more persuaded of this than ever. The strong economy became strong under President Obama but to deny Trump credit for it is not going to wash with most Americans. They feel a new confidence. They see it in more clients at the hardware store, more people eating out, more business start-ups.
There’s lots of doubt out there, especially as regards a few candidates who shall go unnamed here. Let’s see how Beto does against Cruz before making him viable nationally.
There are more nasty hating bastards in America that I ever thought possible.

That may be so, but the article talks about the economy, not rightwing hatred, as a reason to consider that he has a chance in 2020.
I don’t think all of those people are motivated by hate - they are looking at their bottom line. Wait til the tariffs catch up with their businesses.

I spend a little time each day reading the comment boards on Yahoo. It’s full of very sorry comments and i suspect many there are paid by Yahoo in an effort to generate clicks.
Always true. ANd it’s entirely possible for a recession to hit before the 2020 elections. i don’t want that but I’m fairly recession proof. Many are not including a significant segment of his supporters.

I don’t think that’s going to determine his future no matter how it goes. He’s proven himself to be a formidable presence. As for Avenatti, Moore, and the NYT columnists, well, a contrarian take is a staple of political writing. We’re overdue for a recession, first of all, especially with Clownface in the cockpit. If he’d buckled down on infrastructure and other constructive things, if he’d given one hour’s thought to what would actually help regular Americans, if he were capable of taking good advice and knowing it when he heard it, if he were, in a word, smarter, I’d be more open to this possibility. But his getting elected was like a nickel that’s flipped and lands on its edge and stays. We’re not IMHO living in some new reality that we have to recognize where nickels always land on their edges and stay standing. Trump has a long history of spectacular failure and I think that continues to play out. Just my $.02.

Sure. He says a lot of dopey stuff, and dopes like it, and there are a lot of dopes. I get that. All I can say is I live in the blue burbs myself and every educated woman in that kind of place is working against him with a cold fury that I would not want directed at me. Maybe the dopes will get off their couches and waddle off to the polls, and maybe not. The women will be there either way. And a lot of men too. So I guess we’ll see.

Do you know how long 2 years is? In this political climate it easily seems like 10 but anything can happen and, as we know, people can come out of nowhere to run. I feel so defeated sometimes thinking how many people support Trump, but the one thing that can’t happen is he will win a second term. Maybe he’ll have a big fat McDonald’s heart attack.

I’ll see your $.02 and raise you a dime… they are spending so much time bragging on the economy momentum of the previous administration that there will be enough distance when the economy sags from the tRump effect, that the supporters will have to admit the recession was the fault of the tariffs.
