We could spend all day pointlessly debating anachronistic biblical content, but the wiser thing would be to recognize the stupidity of looking to ancient texts for moral guidance. The people who wrote them were spectacularly ignorant of psychology, sexuality, physics, cosmology, etc., and lived in a time of brutal authoritarianism, racism and misogyny. They literally have nothing to tell us about how we should live our lives.

In the days before refrigeration and antiseptics, I imagine eating shellfish and getting tattoos might have been self-punishing capital crimes.
Freedom of speech doesnât cover incitement of violence. If one of his congregation were to take it as a directive to âdo the right thing,â could it rise to criminality?
