Discussion: Fudge Backs Pelosi For Speaker, Pelosi Backs Fudge For Elections Subcommittee

Does the House Democrat count include the latest news on the seat in Utah?

Earlier today the AP called the Utah House election for Democrat Ben McAdams, who beat Rep. Mia Love by 694 votes.

I think Moulton should be concerned that he may soon be receiving a double orchiectomy courtesy of Nancy Pelosi.

Now we are talking! Pelosi is so knowledgeable in all that makes the House run both as majority and minority. She can groom and train her replacements now. Good work done by all. Now, letā€™s go to work and clean up the shit the republican rats left.

And who are the congresscritters the Republicans have groomed, pray tell?

The Elections Sub-Committee should give Congress the "ā€¦ opportunity to create the record necessary to satisfy the 2013 Supreme Court decision in Shelby County v. Holder, so that the protections of the Voting Rights Act will be reinstated and improved.ā€ This may prove to be an EXTREMELY important post.

Not saying a promise of wielding a gavel to bang is the be all and end all to a Memberā€™s ambitions, but being able to make some noise doesnā€™t hurt oneā€™s visibility.

I think thatā€™s extremely unlikely - she has a bunch of baggage and, for the time being at least, isnā€™t on track to be in the leadership. But sheā€™s managed to get herself into a good position of power and influence on an issue where that baggage doesnā€™t matter and Democrats can make a big difference. Which is a good thing!

Didnā€™t Hastert do a lot of grooming? Foley, too.

Well, if you define ā€œstepping asideā€ as being forced to resign or quit because of ethics violations or indictments (Gingrich, DeLay, Hastert) or general incompetence and cowardice (Boehner, Ryan), then yeah. Otherwise, Republican House leaders donā€™t so much step aside as get shot out of the saddle (Cantor).

Congratulations, Madame Speaker. Maybe some people will learn to believe you when you say that you have the votes. My favorite part of the whole breathless media caper? Your complete indifference to Prez Negotiating Geniusā€™ offer to give you a few Ā®acist votes in return for ā€¦ what? Who can doubt that he had some corrupt intent or at least wished-for leverage over the shitload of investigations about to be dropped on his sorry ass.

Iā€™m a fan of Nancy Pelosi overall and think sheā€™s done a great job over the years holding our caucus together at difficult moments. That said, the outright hostility toward anyone opposing her from most of the comments here alarms me. This is a representative democracy and what the challengers are doing is a normal and healthy part of it.

It is a basic fact that Pelosi has been leader for longer than normal in our modern age. Her caucus stuck with her even when losing the House repeatedly - already a testament to her tenacity. And itā€™s obvious to any fair observer that sheā€™s done a poor job grooming a new generation. Instead of demeaning these challengers we should be grateful them for maybe getting the caucus to take a long overdue look at how we elect our leaders and how we are planning for the future.

The test will be does she actually learn from this. Sheā€™s been challenged before and didnā€™t take any more real concrete steps to change how the caucus works.
