Curiously, Pope John Paul 2, also made much the same plea when he visited Cuba in the late 1990s, early 2000s; but the American POTUS and State Department of the time were not politically ready for doing so. Few American “conservatives” called him the “liberal” pope or questioned his anti-Communist bona fides.
