Discussion: France: Trump Lacked 'Common Decency' When We Were In Mourning

He’s got common indecency down pat…

Seems comments still not working. Took over an hour to get this posted. Demands to spell check on every word, even the periods. Then does it again. Cancel and reply buttons seem to not function until spell check passes mustard.

Riiiiight. Kilauea is a friendly (albeit huge) volcano by comparison to Etna, but Madame Pele is in an explosive phase just now. The last time she did that (1790-ish) she killed a bunch of people. As it is, Hawaii County Civil Defense apparently had some trouble getting 2000 people out of Leilani Gardens. I don’t want to think about trying to evacuate Naples. (Or, to get closer to home, Seattle the next time Rainier gets feisty.)

No you really don’t.

When we were in Herculaneum, which is surrounded by the outskirts of Naples, it was Italian school field day and kids from Naples were there. I wondered how many of them would be unable to sleep that night after seeing what Vesuvius was capable of doing.

It makes me a little nervous but I suppose like the people who live there, you just keep going until something happens. I hope I’m not there when it erupts next.

Quite the contrary with Etna - I’m mad that Etna has gotten frisky twice two weeks before we got there. I want to see it spit some fire.

That’s where I want to go - where Shelly drowned and they burned his body on the beach. That is so damn cool.

Yes, it was a bit cold in Florence. Low 40’s I think. I was only there a few days, so I spent almost all of my time inside the museums. I still found the walks rewarding despite the chill, and the wines at dinner cured that quite well.

I prefer cold to heat so I think that would be perfect.

My husband is the problem with that. He hates to be cold.

I’ve always argued that cold is better, because you can always put on a sweater, but when it’s hot, you can only get so naked

Zackly, spent 5 days there with a side trip to Siena.

Still needed to be line for the Uffizi at 20 min before opening (well worth the effort) as even then the lines got long by 11 AM…

I don’t care to see any stratovolcanoes get frisky. Those suckers are explosive. Tokyo is another big city sitting on a tinder box. One of these days Etna is get more than frisky. Give me good old shield volcanoes (like Hawaii or Iceland) any day.

I don’t recall having to wait there or at the Galleria dell’Accademia. I guess I just got lucky. Planned the whole trip the day I got my passport and left a week later.

At this point the USA’s politics, the following areas are of interest for emigration from the USA for me: Canada, and most of Europe where I worked and vacationed for years. I know everywhere I have been in Europe has been friendlier than the USA, and that even includes France when I was there during the Viet Nam War. They hated Americans then, but then again, so did I for what they were doing in Viet Nam. It’s changed since then, for the better. Plus, single payer health care for everyone from birth to death (for all citizens, and even visitors I know have gotten free health care in France), free university education for everyone. All these programs and policies make Europe a good place to live compared to the USA anymore.

They burned the body at Viareggio. In the same area.

That was before the boomers retired and also before the days of inexpensive European cruises. It has changed a whole lot in the last 10 years.

It has changed in the last 5. Used to be we could be in Rome in early May and not see many Americans; mostly it was Europeans. Now by the end of April the streets of Rome are thronged with Americans.

Fuck George Conway. He made his name and career persecuting the Clintons along with Brett Kavanaugh, and defining the toxic and hateful GOP modus operandi since Reagan. He has no fucking principles.

I’m glad Trump’s trip was miserable

Think immigration to Europe is complicated. Last year stayed with an American woman that had spent years in France, then back to US and finally did fill out all the paperwork to become a citizen. She explained it all but of course I’ve forgotten it. She was totally French fluent and led trips in France for Americans. I decided then that I would have to speak the language well otherwise you’re too isolated and I’m not sure I have it in me to get fluent.

It is next to impossible to get citizenship in Italy even if you marry an Italian.

I went back and looked for my trip journal to try and refresh my memory but didn’t find it. Buried in the basement someplace I’m sure, but I think I had the date wrong. It must’ve been '97.

As well as I can recall, I met very few Americans while I was there. There was a small group I met at dinner one day while in Florence, and then a woman who was friends with the Dean of the college where I graduated. We chatted over lunch in the piazza in front of the Pantheon when she noticed I had my sketch book out. Didn’t meet another person who spoke English until the last full day of my trip and he was from Thailand. His dad was English. Found him in an Irish style pub while watching football.

“Trump Tots” ?

More like Traitor Tots…
