Discussion: Fox Panelist: Washington Redskins' Name Is A 'Term Of Respect' (VIDEO)

Hegseth is an insensitive, ill informed goofball. I say that as a term of respect, of course.

perhaps in mr. hegsethā€™s alternate history of the US, this is true:

*ā€œItā€™s not used commonly at all as a racial slur. Itā€™s used historically as a term of respect to people. And I think thatā€™s how we should remember that.ā€
*

but in the real history of the US, it isnā€™t. the truth is, the team name was nothing more than a marketing ploy, devised after the team was sold, and could no longer be called ā€œThe Boston Bravesā€ football club. if the boston braves baseball club had been called the sharks, weā€™d now be rooting for the ā€œWashington barricudasā€ football team.

change the name already, and be done with it.

Peter Brian Hegseth ā€¦ lilly white, Norwegian heritage, Minnesota native, child of privlidge, Princeton educated - 33 year old empty suit - just another scripted cypher form the conservative ranks - mindlessly spouting t out stuff that he fundamentally know little about.
What on earth provides him with any legitimate basis to say whether Native Americans find ā€œRedskinā€ to be an offensive term or not?

ā€œHegseth also said a CBS poll found last year that 90 percent of Native Americans didnā€™t find the name ā€˜Redskinsā€™ offensive.ā€

A similar poll found that 90 percent of Negroes thought that former police chief was actually saluting the President when he called him a N*******.

Thank you for your words of support, my lithic friend. Hereā€™s a blanket for you.

I am an American Indian; and, I have had a variety of people call me ā€œredskinā€ throughout my 60+ years of life. Believe me, not one of those persons meant it as a sign of respect when they use it against.

Imagine how controversial this would be if the Redskins were a team of consequence in the NFL!

Which is why heā€™s on FoxSpews.

You disgusting, lying piece of shit. Shut up, just STFU. Iā€™m sick of this blantant racism and then heā€™ll deny he is racist. There is no excuse for this kind of behavior and any other news channel would have made him REALLY apologize. Jerk. Idiot. Racist asshole.

For appropriate balance I think they need to change the name of the Cowboys to the Dallas Crackers.

Where did this guy study history? LIberty University? I suppose that ā€œwetbackā€ is also a historical term of endearment, so I guess he wonā€™t mind me calling him a cracker? After all I mean it with absolute respect and no offense.

A shit sandwich is a delicacyā€¦If Fox says so.

No it doesnā€™t and youā€™re being his stooge.

Iā€™m not going to waste very much time replying to content-free ad hominem posts from trolls, but Iā€™ll waste two minutes. Itā€™s not exactly clear whether 0.01%, 0.1%, 1.0%, or 10% of a community finding a term offensive is a sufficient condition for us as a society deem it objectively offensive. It doesnā€™t much matter in this context because Fox is going to feed the Oppressed White Male Complex no matter what, and theyā€™re obviously not discussing anything in good faith, but someone could raise that question in good faith.

Your taking up half his argument and saying itā€™s a very good point. You should be dismissive; the guyā€™s a jerkoff, not your fellow philosophy student. And you are writing in good faith, heā€™s not. If you know the character Jesse Pinkman, think of his favorite phrase. Contempt is appropriate here, not metaphysics.

A '79 Transcamaroā€¦on blocks.

I totally believe you, because it depends entirely on context.

This team uses a race of human beings as a mascot. Most teams use animals.

Iā€™ll give them this: the stereotype embodied in their logo seems more respectful than the buffoonish, buck-toothed Cleveland Indian.

Were it just some trivial bunch of people who whine just to have something to do, weā€™d know it.

While it can be said that many are not offended, it likewise can be said that it has become a sufficiently large issue to be legitimate. Once that threshold is crossed, as Dr. King taught us, the arc of history may be long but it bends inexorably towards justice. Itā€™s only a question of time. And of course, justice should never be left to a consensus vote. Itā€™s said that 80% of our citizens believe in angels and UFOs, but thatā€™s hardly a reason to influence policy.

In this case, perhaps we can take the advice of this brilliant crusader against ā€œpolitical correctness,ā€ the bane of every racist who watches Fox News. While itā€™s hopeless to expect team fans to boycott their games on behalf of the very people they brutally slaughtered to steal the land they once worshipped, the nation at large can make it clear to the financial backers and advertisers that we will not support businesses who tacitly condone this outmoded racist imagery. Donā€™t boycott the team ā€“ boycott the support system.

In spite of the protestations of those whoā€™d keep us there, itā€™s high time to move society beyond the pre-1950s where shooting ā€œinjunsā€ on TV was considered entertainment. That much I know; delving into the ancillary arcane might be an interesting intellectual exercise, but in a practical sense itā€™s somewhat moot, for as you point out, itā€™s not possible to have a nuanced discussion with those sworn to stupidity.

Thank you for challenging us to think.
