Trump Hotels around the world would be instant targets of terrorists and who would cover the security cost? Ah, tax payers money! How savvy a businessman he is…
Kelly is in it for her career, first and foremost. She actually isn’t stupid, and could easily moderate her talking points to suit another venue with a minimum of effort.
She is however, most definitely a republican…probably not as extreme as she plays on Fox, and probably not as “moderate” as some may like to believe. Fox was a great fit for her for both of these reasons…good for her career (money with a fast track to the top job of being an evening anchor) and easy for her personal politics.
But, as to being a “good journalist”, I think the key point of that discussion is to make the separation from anchor and reporter. Anchors, by and large today, are not reporters. Many, if not most, have never been actual reporters. The skill sets they develop are not about finding and digging into stories to get to the facts…its about looking good, maintaining an easy vocal rhythm, take instructions through an ear piece without batting an eye, and occasionally conducting an interview that has, at least roughly, already been white boarded (ask him/her these 3-5 questions, let them give these answers and be done in time for the commercial break).
None of that is even remotely related to “real journalism”, and to my knowledge, Kelly has never had a job doing actual journalism…she was never a reporter on a beat, developing contacts, sniffing out a scoop, second and third sourcing something she heard…and certainly not standing out in the rain and snow in front of the White House of Congress, it would mess up her hair.
So no, she isn’t a good journalist, but yes, she is a good anchor. In a different network/environment, I have little doubt that she would do a very good job as an anchor and would do a dismal job as a journalist either at Fox or in another location.
That’s an interesting and valid point. Just to play Devil’s Advocate, what does that mean for the Clinton Foundation when Hillary is President of the United States?
I’ll betcha twenty bucks Hillary’s got an attack ad in the works showing all the dizz-bombs and bullies Trump’s hired and questioning his claim that it doesn’t matter what he doesn’t know, he’ll hire smart people, the best people, the classiest people to work for him. You’ve got Stone threatening people, Lewandowski grabbing them like a drunken frat boy, Pierson babbling nonsense—wouldn’t be pretty.
CBS This Morning aired a clip of Megyn’s fresh Donald interview wherein Donald complimented Megyn for calling him to “clear the air.” Donald said to her, “I never would have done that [made the call]”, and went on to say he considered this stubbornness (not his word) “a flaw”.
Trump could fulfill his fantasy to gun someone down, recorded live on camera, on Fifth Avenue and remain the voter’s choice for President. Pierson would then tell Kelly everyone should refrain from reaching any conclusions about what they’d just witnessed and let the justice system render its verdict. She’s like Trump. He’s never done anything wrong or ill advised, nor worthy of shame or asking forgiveness or apologizing. He’s perfect. He’s already said he’s more popular than the Pope. He’s God, returned to Earth to set everything right again. Pierson believes that. Or at least she’s paid well enough to earnestly lobby us she believes it.
I can only imagine the damning material they will unearth. Trump has been out there going wild for years and years, not worrying about a future career in politics. I look forward to seeing what Hillary and co. come up with.
I think a much better question to ask Pierson is why she, and implicitly Trump, criticize Mitt Romney for being “pro-adoption.”
I think the key point of that discussion is to make the separation from anchor and reporter.
Excellent and enlightening summation of an important distinction. Thanks.
Multiple press outlets have already written about Trump’s many visits to the Howard Stern show. The vile, misogynisticc rants are part of the public record. Trump became the nominee despite that. His poll numbers among GOP voters only rise. He flips off anyone daring not to endorse him. I’m not sanguine airing his dirty laundry will be a campaign panacea, crushing his popularity and scuttling his candidacy. If the wife-beater next door convinces you he’s going to rid the neighborhood of all those greasy wetbacks and find you a job to boot, you’re going to run with the wife-beater. Besides, the bitch probably had it coming to her.
I hope I successfully hinted at that—she’s got excellent skills. She could be an anchor pretty much anywhere and do the job fine. I think what estamm was alluding to was something I felt myself when she read Trump that list of slurs—I thought maybe she’s not hopeless, the way Scrooge, say, turned out not to be hopeless. But I think even more than seeing unfairness, a truly good reporter reads people and situations well. Off the record they can just about always tell you who’s straightforward, who’s full of B.S., and whether a situation is on the level or awry in some ethical or other way. If I were her editor and knew Kelly could do a story in a creditable fashion, I’d still never quite trust her to have that instinctive clarity.
Well said Matt.
Visits to the Howard Stern show are one thing. Revelations about Trump’s business practices–and God knows what else–may be something different.
In any case, the audience here will not be the Republican base, who love misogyny, but independents.
I’m beginning to see the outlines of a permanent face-palm, sunburnt into what’s her name’s forehead.
Everyone that reads or watches television can nearly to the incident rattle off the number of Trump’s bankruptcies; the fact he stiffed suppliers, employees and customers in the course of filing them. They know he exaggerates his wealth. They know he actually builds damned little of anything, making his money merely stamping his name on things, licensing his image and reputation. They know his Trump University was sketchy, his steaks and vodka businesses were ultimately unsuccessful and folded. Most people are aware, or minimally aware, of all this. It hasn’t hurt him, even with Independents. He’s openly, proudly, boisterously bombastic and a bully; profane and insulting, dismissive of knowledge and science and the need for thought out policy proposals. NONE OF THIS HAS HURT HIM. I predict it won’t in the general election either. Everyone waiting for his past to catch up with him forgets one fact, that he is appealing to the average American voter. The average American voter hasn’t read a non-fiction book cover to cover in 20 years, if ever. They’re imbeciles. Trump knows that, and he’s counting on it in the election. And he may not be mistaken in his faith in that fact.
A charitable foundation is in no way comparable to the size and breadth of Trump’s companies. And its infinitely easier for the Clinton’s to turn over the running of the Foundation to a third party…which won’t be either Bill or Chelsea.
By comparison, Trump has business involved in real estate, education, air travel, food production, interstate commerce, tourism, housing…the list just keeps going on and on. He would have to recuse himself from 99% of appropriations bills, because he has a business that would be impacted in some way by every one of them.
WHAAAT?
Is this person taking Palinspeak lessons?
I couldn’t jump to the ten minute mark and watched some of the lead up, including Kelly interviewing a Clinton surrogate, Governor Granholm.
Granholm was the one who made me cringe.
Kelly clearly be lived Trump’s attacks were bogus and was also clearly amazed that the Clinton campaign didn’t plan to refute the attacks. They were just going to ignore them. Kelly brought up that young people didn’t live through the 90s and didn’t know, and that Juanita Broaddrick had made similar accusations to those Trump was now making. I didn’t even see a reference to the fact that not even Kenneth Star found Broaddrick credible. There are lots of people who don’t know that, people who think Bill Clinton really assaulted women (as opposed to being a philanderer with willing participants). Granholm kept insisting that the Clinton campaign would win on policy. I had to stop watching.
Maybe they think the accusations are ridiculous, but not everyone will. A quick, forceful, “That’s absurd and he knows it.” Something. Ignoring it lets him continue. Have we learned nothing from the Swiftboaters?
I forget which daughter was the object of his greasy Paws gripping the imaginary gorgeous rack. It’s like I need a scorecard to keep track.
I understand why white men get involved with the republican party, but I really don’t understand the self loathing that must motivate non whites and women to get involved with them. The mind is a strange biochemical organ.
