I do believe that was the basis behind the criticism of the Bush Administration response to Katrina. Had the Bush Administration and FEMA responded properly instead of exposing their own incompetence then Wal-Mart would not have done more.

Yeah Stossel, we don’ need no friggin’ laws an’ gummint…hell John all we need is a trusty gun the bigger the better to keep order with …wait… that means there’s disorder and …ahem…anarchy in the streets.
Maybe folks will skate in the same direction w/o being told but scale it up to a nation and you’ll get chaos.
Apparently idiocy knows no bounds. All Stossel need do is look at failed states around the globe where governments and laws are nonexistent to see his idea is BS. Somalia, Nigeria, Syria etc.

It kind of tends to be the case that when you allow incompetent people to put other incompetent people in positions of power that things get screwed up. Which is what happened with Michael “Heckuva Job” Brown.

Well, John if you skate in the wrong direction you’re going to knock people down, and you’ll get kncked down, as well. And the ice is cold and hard. If you keep on doing it you will get knocked down on purpose, and then people wearing very sharp blades will skate over you. Then you’ll stop doing that. But a country is not a skating rink, or maybe you hadn’t noticed.

FEMA was incompetent because GW Bush appointed incompetent cronies to run it. He learned from Ronald Reagan, who appointed incompetents to government agencies he didn’t like. When they screwed up, he could say, “See? Government is the problem.” This has been Republican Doctrine ever since. Break the government, then complain that the government is broken.

What Stossel calls “competent” is the Walmart business model that pays wages so low that it costs the taxpayers 6.2 billion dollars in food stamps, Medicaid and subsidized housing for WalMart employees (Forbes report, 4/15/14). You would never see Stossel praise Costco competence for its employee wage and benefit model that treats its employees responsibly.
To Stossel and Republicans generally, a competent company is one that successfully passes its costs of doing business onto the taxpayers.

Walmart’s direct donations after Katrina was 17 million, and adding in kind work it comes to about 25 million. That’s great, but it’s tiny in comparison to the government role in the Katrina response and cleanup. Not to mention, I am quite certain that Walmart wrote off every penny of that on their taxes, just as they do any other community assistance that they make.

Not to mention that Walmart’s profits from the government subsidies to their workers in the form of welfare. Walmart needs to pay a living wage rather than taking that government hand out.

Seriously, what the fuck is he talking about? Does Walmart have a weather satellite we dont know about? Assuming Walmart does indeed have a “weather forecasting” dept. are they using NOAA data? Who does he think he is talking to? Low info Fox viewers? lolol.

I not sure where he skates, but the indoor ice rink where I skate uses “Skate Guards” on the ice. Essentially skate police to make sure things go orderly.
