Even when they’re black, conservatives shouldn’t talk about slavery because they can’t stop themselves from saying something stupid. Isn’t there some way to make conservatives understand that slavery and dependency are opposites?

They aren’t really “tokens” as I understand the term. A “token” would be, for example, an ordinary, innocent black employee hired to show that the employer doesn’t discriminate in hiring. These people are well-paid propagandists who were hired to give Fox/Republicans cover for their vile racist propaganda. More like shields than tokens.

Because really, it was all that free housing and food that enslaved the black people in Lincoln’s day. Not the rape and savage torture and assaults, theft of labor, being bought and sold like cattle, forced separation of families, restrictions on movement and education, and the ever present threat of murder or mutilation without consequence. No, it was the free food and housing that the well-intentioned yet misguided masters so foolishly gave them.
