They used to deny that smoking causes cancer and other health problems. Now they deny climate change. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Maybe the point is not only that Mr. Nixon would push out Dr. Steinfeld but also that Mr. Nixon would nominate Dr. Steinfeld in the first place and let him stand in his bully pulpit for four full years.
Odd how change has to go through such contorted evolutionary process - thinking back to how there were first “no smoking” sections in a plane - and remembering how a comedian once said that this approach was like designating a "no peeing " area in a swimming pool. But it was a start - and eventually it got to the right point.
