Call me naive, but it’s pretty incredible that there isn’t some sort of mechanism built into our system that could hold Congress in contempt (or something like that) for not undertaking an investigation when the president commits blatant illegalities. I guess it’s going to be another “to do” thing on the infinite list when Democrats get back into power.

President Trump’s attorney, Rudy Giuliani, claims the president didn’t know about the payment when he filed that report last year, but this explanation seems implausible. For one thing, Giuliani admits that the president started repaying his debt to Cohen months before he filed his financial disclosure report.
I’m having trouble with the concept that there may actually be someone more stupid than DT, and that this same person once garnered non-partisan, professional respect.

This will be a Mount Everest climb being that it’s Trump’s DOJ and even if it wasn’t proving a person with a multi billion dollar business empire would know about a small six figure transaction would be incredibly difficult without hard evidence like texts or emails. A flipped witness would help too.

Except the current OGE referred it too the DOJ for investigation. Now, I agree, THATS probably as far as it goes but at least the OGE is sorta/kinda doing their job.

There’s only three branches of government. The President/executive is not going to investigate itself. If Congress shirks its duty the only branch of government left is the Judiciary and since they’re coequal branches the Judiciary is loathe to tell the congressional what to do unless they are breaking a Constitutional law. Unfortunately, cowardice and self serving rhetoric are not things covered by the Constitution.
There’s the emoluments avenue but it’s an esoteric one to take that really has never been uesd against a president but Trump has been pretty egregious but, again, you have to remember the 5-4 SCOTUS will be the finall arbiter of any such case and we can’t rest on the slight chance Roberts does the right thing again.
Basically, we have to take the House for any reasonable oversight to happen. Or the Senate but that’s a much bigger order because we are defending so many seats this cycle. Come 2020 the republicans will be in the same rotten position but it will be a Presidential year, which means our turnout will be higher. We always turnout higher during Presidential years, that’s when we’ll probably take the Senate and fingers crossed will keep or even expand our control of the House.

Bill Clinton was the enemy - while Trump pushes for things that the GOP wants - an occasional thumb on the scales of justice is entirely acceptable if it has solid roots in politics.
you could have video of Trump deflowering a White House page on the Presidential desk - while on a cell phone directing government contractors to hold banquets and training programs exclusively at Trump properties and pay twice the going rate - - and the GOP power brokers would barely bat an eye … and would sniff that it was only a “minor indiscretion” not worthy of further discussion.

Just stop. Stop right there. Trump’s DOJ will do no such thing no matter what it is and Horowitz will lick Trump’s balls like he’s been doing so far. Investigate Trump? Are you fucking kidding? Not for real at least. Expect a public statement that they did, however, and that they found he didn’t know and that the super convenient omission was therefore not willful. Then, you can expect to be treated to a very large and loud right wing media blitz claiming DOJ has yet again exonerated Trump and proven there is no collusion and that the Mueller investigation is a hoax and witch hunt. After or during that, you can also expect to be treated to one or more of their favorite Fisher Price briefcase carrying attorneys, like Judge Nap or my personal favorite joke of an attorney, Greg Jarrett, opining about whether the DOJ findings should be considered binding in court or at least upon Mueller, or something something, such that Mueller should not be allowed to buck the DOJ findings.

That inaction you’re witnessing? Yeah…that’s DOJ ALREADY not doing its job. You don’t have to wait for it continue for a certain amount of time before drawing that conclusion, champ.
