Discussion: Former Ambassador To NATO: Trump's Comment 'Reckless' And 'Disturbing'

Trump is a reality show star. He is part of the infotainment industry. He is one of them, baby.

Trump needs an introductory course in international relations. He knows nothing!

ā€œTrump, for many months now, has been very critical of Germany, and Britain, and France ā€” the NATO allies, and yet he treats Putin with kid gloves.ā€
.
Trump is ignorant of the workings of NATO and everything else, of course. But his attitude toward Putin and Russia is more than just ignorance. As Trump would put it, thereā€™s something going on. I earlier linked to the Chait and Foer articlesā€”well worth reading. One of the key graphs:

ā€œIn short, it includes a long series of economic and social ties, which fit the pattern Vladimir Putin has used to infiltrate and undermine governments elsewhere ā€” including in Ukraine, a coup Putin pulled off through Paul Manafort, who is now Trumpā€™s campaign manager. Michael Crowley and Julia Ioffe have both described how the Russian propaganda apparatus has thrown itself behind Trumpā€™s campaign. As Foer notes, Trumpā€™s lack of creditworthiness makes him unusually reliant on unconventional sources of financing. This makes him vulnerable to financial leverage by an unscrupulous foreign entity.ā€

This is truly creepy. and deserves a lot more coverage.

Furthermore, sheā€™d be written off as a dumb blonde and an airhead. Her poll numbers would be a tiny fraction of what Trump has now, yet this guy gets a pass for being totally incompetent.

This is a strong, much-needed interview/article that gets to the core of the issue. Appreciate it, Caitlin.

On seeing the photo an Daisy like ad image flashed across my mind. Scary image.

I think you can extend the comparison: weā€™re all hoping his faulty wiring will prevent destruction on a massive scale.

One wonders what the history of the Cold War would have been like if that bomb had actually gone off.

Someone has to ask Trump the question:

Is there or has there been any direct or indirect communication with the Russian government regarding your candidacy?.

At the end of the course heā€™d get an F.

You know, I think just one line really sums it up, when he said this ā€œprojects weaknessā€ to our Alliesā€¦

Trump and his minions like to go on and on about how not saying the magic words of ā€œradical Islamic terrorā€ and not threatening to be more barbaric than our enemies ā€œprojects weaknessā€ā€¦

No, what truly projects weakness is the fact that an incompetent moron like Trump is not only given a microphone to say this dumb crap, not only that he is running for presidentā€¦ Itā€™s that one of our two major parties nominated the jackass AND ARE TRYING TO EXCUSE HIS STAGGERING IDIOCY, AND PEOPLE ARE BUYING INTO IT!!. That projects weakness to our enemies. to someone like Putin, the fact that a sizable junk of our nation can be duped into entertaining this jackass as anything more than a sideshow FREAK! Is the true evidence of the weakness that is rotting out the core of our nation.

Oh, Iā€™m right there with you. He seems way too chummy with Putin, and one wonders what the endgame would be should (gawd forbid) Trump win the Presidency. At best, one would expect him to just send forcefully worded letters to Putin if Russia does anything (with a ā€˜wink, winkā€™ at the end to show no hard feelings). At worst, he allows Putin to bully the former Soviet states into accepting a Russian leader (read: puppet of the Kremlin) and being brought back into the fold by political force.

I have to love how all the Bushites are coming out of the woodwork to slam Trump. And on foreign policy of all things.

Trump seems to instinctually get that running a country with high wealth disparity (a subject he wants to sell you a book about) such as the US or Russia also requires good crowd control and some sort of external threat to rally around. Russia, China and the US have similar gini index readings, so what seems reckless and disturbing, is par for the course in maldistributed economies. Turkey just decided to join this group, so wow, imagine the political discourse when you have Trump, Erdogan and Putin running things, Xi Jinping will sound like the adult in the room. Truly the Chinese century has arrived.

Hey, who better to call out massive cock-ups, then the team that orchestrated the last major cock-up.

I just finished a very interesting SF/fantasy trilogy on that subject. The first of the three was published in 1987 and the last in 2000. Essentially an alien race scooped up the relatively few remaining survivors, healed them, and had a plan for their children. As a child of the Cold War who at age 11 was convinced the bomb was being dropped any moment (the Cuban Missile Crisis), I found it very interesting as a possible consequence of that frightening time. Seeing as most of you like the same nerdy TV shows and books that I do, you might also like it. I read it because I found it on BookBub for 99Ā¢ or whatever last week, but itā€™s $11-14 on Amazon. The Marin County Library carries nothing by this author, but I was impressed enough to go looking for her other works.
