Discussion: Forecasters Say Irma Looks Tampa-Bound, But Miami Isn't In The Clear

We were 500 miles from Sandy and we had several trees go down in the area from that storm. This storm has strong winds wider than Florida.

Out of sensitivity to Floridians, I will go all the way to Tibet to mention climate change.

According to someone who, presumably, can read Chinese, this video is of melted permafrost flowing down a hillside. It is not clear if this specific flow is representative of what’s happening in the region, nor is it clear that this flow is the result of climate change. However, it is a good reminder that a warmer climate will lead to seasonal thaws penetrating further into the ground, and there is an enormous amount of methane locked up in permafrost. Methane is a much more potent greenhouse gas than CO2 is, though it has a much shorter residence time in the atmosphere.

The size of the flow is not immediately apparent, but watch for the video to pan over to show a structure next to the flow.

Here’s to “wind-driven rain” … and hoping that Grift-a-lagoh’s insurance policy doesn’t cover it :stuck_out_tongue:

You don’t have to go to Tibet, Bethel Alaska has melting permafrost.

Along> the main thoroughfare here, drivers brake for warped asphalt. Houses sink unevenly into the ground. Walls crack and doors stick. Utility poles tilt, sometimes at alarming angles.

We can all quit hoping that Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago is damaged because taxpayers will pay to rebuild it. He most likely has it insured for more than it’s worth.

A Federal Emergency Management Agency spokesperson told HuffPost the beachfront property is insured through the National Flood Insurance Program.

This is unreal. The ocean’s gone! (video)

I think this will be quite a storm. Right now the eye is a few miles off the south coast of Key West but here in Atlantic Beach, the other end of the state, we are getting severe wind and heavy rain. I usually pitch my lawn furniture into the pool for these things and was planning to do so today. Gonna have to find them though. I live on the ICW and most of those chairs flew over the bulkhead an hour ago. Oddly the one on my dock is upright and doesn’t seem to have moved an inch. Judging by the early arrival of strong squalls…this will be a big storm.

It’s not gone. It’s just visiting Florida for a few days. It’ll be back once it brings down the house over there.

On an unrelated note, I find that last sentence terribly funny. “the Nashville area (might) end up getting the remnants of both Harvey and Irma.” Four hundred miles from the Gulf, and they may end up with dual hurricane action. Technically tropical storm, but still…

Rand Paul, Tennessee"Senator," voted against the Harvey aid package for Texas! Ya think he might be wanting $ when his state has to deal with remnants of 2 hurricanes? Tea Baggers are such dummies, like the rest of the GOP.
