Very sad for the tree. It’s not the tree’s fault it became associated with Jackson. Almost 180 years is a good run.

A little sleuthing and it turns out the life span of a magnolia is 80-120 years. This one is close to 180. Not bad.

That’s a low bar
Thank you!!! I lo your comment, it’s true!!! Eisenhower could never been elected today, no matte what party he ran under!
Can youjust imagine today’s republicans comin up with the idea of an interstate highway system???
WHY SHOULD I PAY FOR ROADS THROUGH STATES I MAY NEVER DRIVE IN
Snowflake, AZ.
Every time I walk into a public library, I am grateful for the miracle of the publc-mindedness of generations past.
Forever a toll road it will be.
Like in Texas, they periodically try to change a highway section that was paid for fully many times over and turn it into a toll road. And worse, the money goes to a private interest.
“Trump critic” who voted with Trump at least 92% of the time. Maybe he can team up with Kickback Bob Corker.
Need to use this if Dear Leader tries to run again, He Killed A Symbol of the South!
Precisely. There isn’t a dime’s worth of policy difference between Flake and Drumpf. He just wants a old money country club right wing Rethug who would be comfortable in an austere wood-lined boardroom without immediately redoing the place, and especially the toilet, in gold.
Well, W. ran on compassionate conservatism…so maybe twitterless trumpism?
On a more serious note…Corker and Flake both will start with a lead over any Democratic candidate in 2020, because the media will fall over itself to paint them as the “true” opponents to Trumpism. They will say what Dems are doing is just same old politics.
I thought I was the only one who felt like that. Admittedly, I’m an academic, and we like books. It goes beyond that, though. Some of our public libraries have basic computer training for seniors, family-friendly, educational movies on Friday evenings for people who can’t afford the theatre, speakers on current topics and so much more. Having these resources are good for all of us but I can’t imagine any current member of the GOP being willing to finance such endeavors (certainly not at the expense of tax cuts for the wealthy).
Well said. And not just the GOP. Andrew Carnegie funded lots of town libraries.
At the Freemont County Library in Lander, Wyoming, you can watch broadcasts of the Metropolitan Opera in HD, for $10, $5 for students. (Suggested donations)
Flake contributed to this damning statistic:
.
“dose the GOP” – I think you answered your own question.
Somewhat OT, but (maybe) an interesting anecdote about libraries. My sister is a principal in a poor, immigrant district. Many parents are day laborers with undocumented family members and very little disposable income. My sister organizes “visit the public library” Saturdays to connect families with resources for themselves and their kids. Sometimes she has to coax them to sign up because of misconceptions about ICE being there, etc. She said that when it’s time to board the buses and leave, kids are beaming as they take books and videos home, parents are smiling because they now know where to bring the kids to get help with homework, they can access a computer for job listings - well, you get the idea. This is but one example of what a society with decent priorities can do.
Your YES vote on the TAX SCAM bill will not be looked at with favor. You might get billionaire’s dollars but you won’t get poor and middle class voters to support you. You had a chance and blew it.
He was a genuine philanthropist, but he also wanted Americans to pronounce his name properly----car-NAY-ghee----instead of the way it is usually pronounced—CAR-neg-ee.
In that he failed, but many of the more than 2500 libraries he funded and built are still in use.
Don’t you wonder why the Romney or Trump sons don’t find something meaningful like this to do with their money? They could first set aside enough $$ for houses, cars, trips, yachts, top education, and the best medical care for themselves and their kids, and I wouldn’t begrudge them that at all. But once they have more than they can ever spend, I always imagine that they might want to do something valuable for the world around them. Edit to get back to the topic: Flake is a self-delusional hypocrite who will never get anywhere in a presidential race.
