Discussion: Flake Explains Why He Sought A Delay In The Kavanaugh Confirmation Vote

She had never expected to relay the most emotional moment of her life to a United States senator. She had never actually told anyone before. It had just come out, right there, in front of everyone, soon to be broadcast on national TV.

Her mother had called her after seeing it on cable. Even she had not known.

The Kavanaughs of the world have long relied on the silence of their victims.

You had no frigging idea? NO FRIGGING IDEA? And you’re supposed to be one of the "decent " ones? My God.

This is the most spine he’s shown in years, maybe in his life.

If he’s not careful, he may be able to sit up soon without pillows to keep him from toppling over.

“I think that’s important, and people out there need to know that we’ve taken every measure that we can within reason to make sure this process is worthy of this institution.”

That is a lie.

NOTHING would have changed the Republicans stance. McConnell?. Please. It’s like Jews trying to negotiate with Hitler.

My guess is he got an earful from someone close to him.

'Cos five minutes after he changes his mind, she pipes up saying she agrees with him. These Republithugs are pretty transparent.

That is the money question. Blocking a centrist when we all thought Hillary was going to win made no sense then and it makes no sense now, unless the whole pack of them knew Hillary was going to lose.
This is serious tin-foil-hat speculation, but then I remember, “Russia, if you’re listening…”. Now we know they were.
The second is no less unlikely than the first, and we know the second happened.

What’s missing here is the Republicans’ desire to deny Obama whatever they could deny him. It was just that simple.

Occam’s razor says you’re probably right, but we could both be right; they’re not mutually exclusive.

The Senate is supposed to advise and/or consent. McConnell blatantly refused to do what the Constitution requires. After the play became obvious, Obama could have set a deadline close to the end of his term and, when that deadline expired, he could have just gone ahead and sworn Garland in. What could the Republicans have done at that point, one wonders.

(And yes, Obama was given this advice — and he rejected it.)

Flake, what the hell made you blink? Is it the fact that the polls are coming out soon?

They trust their friends. They do not trust you.

I actually take a different take on it. Flake is very conservative, he likes KAV for all of the reasons I don’t (he will overturn roe v. wade, would limit gay rights, will gut gun control laws, and is a fan of $$$s in politics) but he was uneasy with the way things were going. But he actually was not so arrogent that he actually listened, and will even admit that it changed his perspective and vote.

If more republicans (and some of the D’s who also don’t listen well) were like this we would have a much more functional body politics. We need more listening and less FOX news style TV yelling/tweeting.

Power too Flake for listening, and hopefully something will come up…

The pinpoint: Saw his political future evaporating; cornered and videotaped in an elevator trying to ignore a woman saying, “Look at me. Tell me I don’t matter.”; really saw his political future evaporating into a reeking, stench-filled mist.

To date, nobody can say he doesn’t live up to the contents of his character.

Probably watching FOX news, reading the WSJ, and reading sites like the weekly standard and NRO. Flake is not a winger, doubt he reads Britebarf, but his view is rather limited.

This is why at times (see e.g. Romney) politicians don’t believe they are going to loose when the pollsters come say they are in trouble. Hard to get outside of the bubble.

Yeah, he got blasted, but he’ll never admit the women had any effect. It’s just him being willing to reconsider.

At this point, I don’t see that an FBI investigation is needed to reject Kavanaugh: he has shown an unbecoming disrespect for US senators and, by extension, for the institution in a multi-party democracy. In and of itself, that strikes me as quite enough as any oath he now takes to uphold and protect the constitution must be assumed to be problematic.

They need to take the NYT test on reading emotions if they have no clue whether someone they don’t know is telling the truth or not.
