âI think thatâs important, and people out there need to know that weâve taken every measure that we can within reason to make sure this process is worthy of this institution.â
That is the money question. Blocking a centrist when we all thought Hillary was going to win made no sense then and it makes no sense now, unless the whole pack of them knew Hillary was going to lose.
This is serious tin-foil-hat speculation, but then I remember, âRussia, if youâre listeningâŚâ. Now we know they were.
The second is no less unlikely than the first, and we know the second happened.
The Senate is supposed to advise and/or consent. McConnell blatantly refused to do what the Constitution requires. After the play became obvious, Obama could have set a deadline close to the end of his term and, when that deadline expired, he could have just gone ahead and sworn Garland in. What could the Republicans have done at that point, one wonders.
(And yes, Obama was given this advice â and he rejected it.)
I actually take a different take on it. Flake is very conservative, he likes KAV for all of the reasons I donât (he will overturn roe v. wade, would limit gay rights, will gut gun control laws, and is a fan of $$$s in politics) but he was uneasy with the way things were going. But he actually was not so arrogent that he actually listened, and will even admit that it changed his perspective and vote.
If more republicans (and some of the Dâs who also donât listen well) were like this we would have a much more functional body politics. We need more listening and less FOX news style TV yelling/tweeting.
Power too Flake for listening, and hopefully something will come upâŚ
The pinpoint: Saw his political future evaporating; cornered and videotaped in an elevator trying to ignore a woman saying, âLook at me. Tell me I donât matter.â; really saw his political future evaporating into a reeking, stench-filled mist.
To date, nobody can say he doesnât live up to the contents of his character.
Probably watching FOX news, reading the WSJ, and reading sites like the weekly standard and NRO. Flake is not a winger, doubt he reads Britebarf, but his view is rather limited.
This is why at times (see e.g. Romney) politicians donât believe they are going to loose when the pollsters come say they are in trouble. Hard to get outside of the bubble.
At this point, I donât see that an FBI investigation is needed to reject Kavanaugh: he has shown an unbecoming disrespect for US senators and, by extension, for the institution in a multi-party democracy. In and of itself, that strikes me as quite enough as any oath he now takes to uphold and protect the constitution must be assumed to be problematic.
