Discussion: Federal Appeals Court Strikes Down Texas Voter ID Law

Texas will appeal to the US Supreme Court, and the Roberts Court, led by Justice Thomas, will rule that the law is exactly what the founding fathers meant when they declared African Americans to be only 3/5 of a person.

Just glanced at the opinion but Iā€™m not sure itā€™s being reported correctly . . .

The 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans is one of the most conservative there is. If they struck it down you know it was messed up to begin with.

Iā€™m going to leave this right here:

In-person voter fraud is practically non-existent. But ā€¦ please feel free to share examples of this kind of voter fraud occurring.

Attorney General Ken Paxton did not comment because his sorry ass is under indictment AND his sorry ass is in trouble for not enforcing same sex marriage.

He replied with the usual GOP Voter Fraud Unicorn gobbledygook.

Please explain for us dummies

Indicted Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton did not immediately comment on the ruling.

Part of it was remanded back to the circuit court but part of it was ruled as a violation of the VRA. Iā€™m not a lawyer and I wish one with Constitutional Law experience would chime in.

All the states who try and do this also reduce voting hours at the same time. What does reduced hours have to with voting fraud, nothing . Does a bank combat banking fraud by closing its doors. Itā€™s obviously all about voter discrimination no matter what they say.

There is something so wrong, so perverse in this country when the bizarroland Republicans, the same political party that is trying to take away voting rights, civil rights, human rights, social rights and constitutional rightsā€¦is the party that is relentlessly pushing more guns on this populace and encouraging that populace to take up arms for fear that ā€˜the government is trying to take away our rights.ā€™ And their low/no information base eats that swill and comes back for more.

Likely, but this is different than the last case. The last one in effect allowed states to make Laws without the Federal guidelines and review. It never said such a Law would by default be Constitutional, totally different issue. I see the SCOTUS shooting this Law down too, it is a proven fact that thousands of legit voters would be prevented from voting, and discriminatory Laws are not Constitutional.

I do see where part of this has to be reviewed again by a lower court, etc. No time to look that upā€¦

Itā€™s right there in the Constitution - ā€œYou must have an approved ID in order to vote.ā€

You can look it up! Oh, waitā€¦

Nuh uh!

Kris Kobach said there were as many as a HUNDRED that he was going to investigate in Kansas alone!

(Which even if it were true, would amount to diddly squat.)

Somebody please correct me if I am wrong, but when the SCOTUS struck down parts of the VRA, they struck down the formula for determining a discriminatory district, but it left intact the part that stated if a state had been ruled by a court to be discriminatory they were automatically placed on the pre-clearance list. So doesnā€™t this automatically put Texas on the DOJā€™s preclearance list for the next several election cycles?
