Hint to AP: the place is called Doña Ana County not Dona Ana County. If it were Dona, it would be pronounced like Dona Nobis Pacem. Adding the tilde to the n makes it say dōn (long o)-ya. Omitting the tilde is just lazy and disrespectful. It’s a Spanish word. Use Spanish accent marks.

You know, I’ve started noticing stupid grammatical errors in stories on the BBC for all love. Even BBC writers no longer understand how to use pronouns correctly. “This was him saying. that this was…” I’ve actually seen that. “It was his saying that this was…” is correct. Nobody knows that you use the possessive anymore. Just like nobody knows how to differentiate between volume and number anymore.
It is to weep.

That it doesn’t surprise me is in itself troubling enough. If this gets normalized, nothing really stops them turning on other citizens when they feel justified enough.
And by the way, this uncomfortably parallels how Hitler’s Sturmabteilung (Brownshirts) got started in the 1920s. Hitler spoke against “violent acts that divide the nation” but implicitly encouraged and allowed their antics, much as Trump does with White Nationalists and other hate groups.
We really need to rescue our politics from the “cult of personality” approach to populism, and push harder for a more policy-driven approach.
