Discussion: Father Of High School Shooter Gets 2 Years Prison On Gun Charges

Discussion for article #244517

Here’s hoping there are more…

Would like to see guns registered, and when sold, the weapon is registered in the new owner’s name.

i.e. be a responsible gun owner.

Which is what Obama and others are asking for - common sense

Good. This needs to happen much more often.

Raymond Fryberg apologized for his son’s actions…

There are times when “I’m sorry” just doesn’t even begin to cut it.

Yes…but none of those make your dick feel big…other than an F350 with dualies I guess. No one wants to register a penis extension.

While I agree that parents need to be held accountable when their kids kill people with guns they got from their parents, I can’t agree that the father of a dead kid got off easy. It’s the ones whose kids live, even if that kid spends the rest of their life in jail, it’s those parents who are never prosecuted that get off easy.

How about the parents of the dead kid this guys gun killed? Sorry as far as I am concerned he should have been charged with man slaughter, unless it was clearly shown that the gun used was locked up safely and the son basically stole it.

well said. Savede me some keystrokes

They miss the point. He should be tried as an accessory to murder, 4 counts.

Wish more cases were prosecuted for the reckless and irresponsible gun owning parents that don’t secure their arms. If more parents were prosecuted, maybe, there may be a serious message of consequences for those who leave guns in easy reach of children. Why have such laws on the books, in many states, if its not enforced. I will agree with some on this site that 2 years is rather lenient for the deaths resulting from such negligence.

Except that’s not what he got 2 years for.

And look at all the assumptions that he didn’t have the guns secured. Teenagers have a way of getting into things even when they’re locked. Being quick to judge is a character flaw, but I don’t think the authoritarian types in here care much about that. Arm chair prosecutors with little, if any, humanity left…

Unfortunately, those parents are sentenced to the worst punishment of all. I’m not saying the father shouldn’t have been charged and shouldn’t go to jail. Every one of these parents that leave guns around that their kids use to either purposefully or accidentally shoot other people should face some legal ramifications. But even in this case the father isn’t in trouble for his kid using the gun to kill a bunch of people and himself, he’s in trouble because he lied to get the gun.

ETA: Wait, isn’t this the father of the boy who’s brother actually sued to get the gun back? That might have been elsewhere. It was fairly recent.

Not sure if this is accurate but I’ve read recently that as time has gone by fewer and fewer people own firearms, while at the same time a lot more firearms are being sold. It seems like the logical conclusion is that the people who already own firearms are purchasing more, and a lot more. This fellow purchased nine firearms within a year and a half. Where does that sudden urge come from, surely not an innocent hobby? I have a friend who was going through a divorce a few years ago and at that time she told me the alarming news that her soon-to-be ex had acquired within a few months three pistols and two rifles after never having owned any firearms during the 20+ years they’d been together. Fortunately nothing happened in that case. Note that this fellow in Washington also seems to have been going through a contentious breakup of some sort. Seems like someone purchasing a large number of firearms in a short period should be flagged somehow as suffering some kind of fragile ego syndrome…

If the family was descendants of European invaders, not native Americans, and his son’s name Bob, not Jaylen, how much time would he have been given?

Your information is correct. Fewer people own guns but those few own a lot more guns.
