Discussion for article #223610
I think those folks from the Washington Post need some âStraight FlipâŚerâŚTalkâ.
McCain is simply a liar. He knew about the proposal for over two years. Congress was informed about this swap over two years ago when it was first proposed. As reported by Rolling Stone magazine, back in early 2012 the debate between Senators supporting and opposing this swap came to a boil in January of that year, when administration officials went to Capitol Hill to brief a handful of senators on the possibility of the prisoner exchange. The meeting, which excluded staffers, took place in a new secure conference room in the Capitol visitor center. According to sources in the briefing, the discussion sparked a sharp exchange between Senators John McCain and John Kerry, both of whom were decorated for their service in Vietnam. McCain, who endured almost six years of captivity as a prisoner of war, threw a fit at the prospect of releasing five Taliban detainees.
âTheyâre the five biggest murderers in world history!â McCain fumed
Kerry, who supported the transfer, thought that was going a bit far.
âJohn,â he said, âthe five biggest murderers in the world?â
McCain was furious at the rebuke. âThey killed Americans!â he responded. âI suppose Senator Kerry is OK with that?â
McCain reluctantly came around on the prisoner exchange, according to those present at the meeting, but he has continued to speak out against negotiating with the Taliban.
I knew this several days ago.
McCainâs on TV so much how can anyone expect to him to actually remember all the bullshit he spouts much less hold him to it?
We who are not in Congress know things way before they do.
JMcC desperately needs a weatherman
Thanks for the link.
The sick part is while he was on television back in Feb. of this year saying he would support this prisoner exchange, he was not addressing the VA whistleblower trying to get his office to take action over the situation at the VA medical center which in his own back yard. The medical facility which is at the center of the scandal.
As Maddow noted, this episode is the Rosetta Stone that explains everything thatâs wrong with Washington right now. For Republicans, it works like this:
- State position.
- Hope Obama doesnât do what you say he should do.
- When Obama does what you said he should do, denounce him for doing it.
Well-put put-down.
McCain is an absolute jerk. How can a former POW treat other POWs like this?
This is just another item in a long list of reasons why veterans and POW/MIA groups so strongly dislike Mr. J. McCain.
I wonder about whether there was a lot of political calculation to the timing of this exchange, and even to having the President appear with Bob Bergdahl. It certainly has drawn the crazy out of the Repubs in a terrible way (for say, a moderate or âindependentâ political observer). It really really makes them look bad. There are Idaho Republicans who are more measured as the local politics are much different. However I wonder if that local politics wonât find its way out into the wider media narrative (wishful thinking I know) and shame the Repubs who canât help themselves from wishing out loud that the Taliban had beheaded Bergdahl.
Now the old bastard is getting away with knowing about the mess at his hometown VA facility in Phoenix. Just as the Az. papers started uncovering the fact that the whistleblower Doctor had informed McCainâs office as well as national media about the waiting list manipulations etc. back in February and he did nothing in response except to filibuster a bill that would have alleviated a lot of the problems caused by the chronic understaffing, Senator Sanders lets him come back as co-sponsor of virtually the same bill he blocked just four months ago. Good old Bernie is allowing the lying bastard to be co-sponsor because he feels it may give cover to more Repubs to not filibuster this time around. Senator Sanders cares about actually helping veterans enough that he would allow this deranged old cretin to take some of the credit if thatâs what it takes to get the prowar/anti vet GOP onboard.
McCain is certainly a dodgy old critter isnât he? Not quite fast enough either in the Senate or in a fighter plane to avoid getting caught out, but he does try!
The corporate media will run with whatever provides them with the juicy, headline making controversy they depend on for ratings. They certainly wonât let facts get in the way of that, and thatâs why itâs so important for Democrats to bang on the drum when they appear on cable teevee. Unfortunately Democrats are more likely to shoot their own than fight for their leader. Weâll see.
Watching McCain crash and burn as his career winds down is a sad affair to watch.
McCain is also not supporting the US militaryâs position on Bergdahlâs release.
JCS Chairman Martin Dempsey:
âIn response to those of you interested in my personal judgments about the recovery of SGT Bowe Bergdahl, the questions about this particular soldierâs conduct are separate from our effort to recover ANY U.S. service member in enemy captivity. This was likely the last, best opportunity to free him. As for the circumstances of his capture, when he is able to provide them, weâll learn the facts. Like any American, he is innocent until proven guilty. Our Armyâs leaders will not look away from misconduct if it occurred. In the meantime, we will continue to care for him and his family. Finally, I want to thank those who for almost five years worked to find him, prepared to rescue him, and ultimately put themselves at risk to recover him.â

Of course McGrumpy flip flopped. Heâs lucky he can remember his name and what he thinks he does for a living (perpetual war hero).
McCainâs objections are the height of hypocrisy. If it wasnât for prisoner exchanges he would still be sitting in a Vietnamese prison.
Someone needs to ask him if he knows how many American soldiers the prisoners he was exchanged for killed.
