Itâs a shame your understanding of Muslim culture has ignored the last couple decades. Hereâs a book I recommend you read. It will open your eyes to the actual Muslim world rather than the one that exists in the GOP talking points. Passionate Uprisings: Iranâs Sexual Revolution, by Pardis Mahdavi
"There is perhaps no place in the world today where the stakes of partying and having sex are higher than in present-day Iran. Drinking and dancing can lead to arrest by the morality police and a punishment of up to 70 lashes. Consequences for sex outside of marriage can be even more severeâup to 84 lashes, or even public execution.
But even under the threat of such harsh punishment, a sexual revolution is taking place. Iranian youth continually risk personal safety to meet friends, date, and, ultimately, to have sex. In the absence of any option for overt political dissent, young people have become part of a self-proclaimed revolution in which they are using their bodies to make social and political statements. Sex has become both a source of freedom and an act of political rebellion.
With unprecedented access inside turn-of-the century Iran, Pardis Mahdavi offers a firsthand look at the daily lives of Iranian youth. They are given a voice as she tells the stories of their intertwined quests for sexual freedom, political reform, and a better future â but not a future without risk. The sexual revolution is also leading to increased levels of abortion, HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases, and ongoing emotional troubles and mental illnesses, with worrying implications for Iranian youth and Iranian society at large."
I am as skeptical as you are Emeliano, but I still have hope that our people will make the the best choice for the country and show the creature Trump the door. But I want to close out with some joy. One of my favorite Marches from south of the border. It used to be played a lot by southern California high schools bands when I was growing up, before the ubiqitous, âLouie, Louieâ took over. Anyway for all TPM latinos and latinas:
This is not born out by evidence. Itâs generally more accurate to put western Muslims in the same category as western Christians on this subject; if you ask them in vague phrasing like âSharia lawâ or âBiblical lawâ, they tend to agree that yes, of course they believe in Godâs law. When you drill down though, other than in radicalized subgroups of both faiths, they generally donât believe in things like killing people for eating pork, and other extreme examples, and far prefer western criminal justice systems.
That is not how I heard @horrido. I heard him judging ACTIONS taken self-righteously - such as cutting off of hands etc outside our our understanding of human rights. I also know that all religions have a broad spectrum of beliefs and levels of fundamentalism and intrusion. So I respect the right of someone to practice their religion (tolerance) but not to take actions that force their religion on others (intolerance).
