Discussion: Extraordinary Measures Keep A Possible Mueller-Linked Case Secret

Here’s hoping it was a deliberate mistake.

I had the thought this morning when I read somewhere that some guy on CNN pointed out that although Mueller agreed to ask Trump written questions he in no way ruled out an interview. Who else but Trump would have any colorable argument about not appearing before a GJ and would be important enough that the Court and Judicial system would engage in the kind of extraordinary secrecy that has been seen?

At first I thought maybe Pence, but Trump for sure the court would assist in not creating the kind of media crazy that would be evident if it was a hearing on Trump needing to appear before the GJ.

BTW, I too hope that Mueller will challenge the 20-y o DOJ Policy Opinion about no indictment. Hope Mueller indicts!!!

Here’s the link to the story fro HuffPo on Mueller seeking to interview trump. If trump is resisting a GJ subpoena I can see the court taking these measures to keep it from becoming a media circus while the decision is made. The law is pretty clear that the President can be subpoenaed (Nixon and Clinton). But I can see the kind of effort being made would only be made to keep someone of this magnitude secret.

I don’t think it has to do with moving Butina – the request made under seal should have been kept secret of course but the clearing the entire building so that the identity of the lawyers and who they represent would not be done for someone like a Butina. The only one who makes “sense” is Trump himself.

I’d treat this article with skepticism. Mueller doesn’t leak. This is coming from Team Trump. They want the opportunity to clean up the mess Trump made in his written answers. Mueller is unlikely to give it to him unless it is a prelude to a plea agreement where Trump resigns.

How rude! Why pick on people with facial hair and warts. They DON’T mean the people behind them are criminal, Please revise your thinking on this, and leave us be.

If the case is serious enough, it is done. Big drug or Mafia case cooperator, I would bet you it is done. I would bet you it was done when Sammy The Bull, having been appointed a non Gotti paid attorney, decided to come in and plead guilty under a cooperation agreement. I am not saying it is done every case, but one where the US Atty and the defendant want to make sure he is not outed, it is probably done. I dont begrudge the Press or Tierney Snead doing their job, but I would imagine the reason for keeping the proceeding secret is the danger of obstruction given the group of miscreants, miscreant lawyers, miscreant DOJ Acting Attorney General and people like Cohen-Watnick doing Trump’s bidding and spying at the DOJ, all at the center of the various conspiracies here.

I’m sorry I hurt your feelings. My mother had a mole on her face that produced 3 black hairs. My siblings and I teased her about it and she gave it back in triple. About 10 years ago my older brother had to have a segment of his colon removed and a colostomy bag installed for a while. My mother called him and said, “At least your bag matches your shoes finally.” We were that kind of family. Anyway, you’re right; I shouldn’t have said that.

Actually, I’ve kind of liked her—ever since she avoided his hug on stage. (Can’t remember if it was at the Repugnant convention or some other function.) She seems unlike the rest—I wonder if he’s really her father. She mostly wasn’t raised in his presence, and that must have helped.

probably yes. and won at the District Court. in DC. Will there be secret argument before the USSC? And why?

It is almost axiomatic. Trump must answer for his crimes. The offenses are too much. Too obvious. For a president (or any leader) to commit these crimes in this manner and pronounce himself unpunishable would be the death of this Republic in the short term sense and long term sense.

Short term: continuing the damage to our institutions, environment (social and physical), policy
Long term: establish a legal precedent

All sensible Americans know this. The click-bait present in the media is just that:

Click Bait

El Chapo is already on trial. This subpoena is for a big guy who doesn’t want publicity. on these terms. He’ll tweet viciously if it suits him, but not this publicity. It will be public soon.

Very informed guess. I would have guessed the extraordinary measures were to protect some investigation and information from the big guy who tweets, and all his spies embedded in House Committees, the former Sessions Chief of Staff and special national security advisor who had been fired from the White House for sharing classified information with Devin Nunes, etc. But this is a high probability informed speculation of who is possibly involved…Especially since it involves an appeal

This is normal court security for sealed proceedings.[/quote]

No, it is not “normal”. That is why there is a headline, “Extraordinary Measures…” over this.

Have you ever represented someone who might be killed by a drug cartel or OC for cooperating.

I can almost hear your indignant hand-wringing.

Do you want POLITICO or Tierney Sneed to be able to stake out the courtroom and coat rooms and sleuth out who entered a courtroom for a sealed proceeding?

That would be cool. Hiding in a closet is how Jay Leno kept his job on the Tonight Show.

What about on Child Abuse matters that are conducted in sealed courtooms, are those Real Star Chamber Stuff?

So your claim is that the right wing is totally always completely 100% on board with reality and facts and would never make anything out of this mysterious circumstance to spread some new conspiracy story.

The same people who pushed the pizza parlor child porn ring story and got a guy to go shoot the place up?

I would say that is naive.

I am saying that POLITICO is a GOP rag, notwithstanding its attempts to cleanse itself after helping elect Trump, and that their desire to sleuth out who is possibly cooperating with Mueller or who is appealing an unfavorable ruling in a Mueller investigation, ought not be enabled by TPM.

But you are entitled to your opinions. However, just so you know, I do not wring my hands. Latinos don’t do that. It is sort of an Anglo thing, this hand wringing. Maybe of British or Northern European origin.

And it is normal procedure for a big important still under investigation case. I am sure that the SDNY and EDNY take this measure several times a year, in their big cases. I will admit it is extraordinary in your run of the mill cases. But this is probably done several times a year in the very court house from which the story was reported.

They don’t recuse based on who they previously worked for, they recuse based on what they worked on.

One time, online, I mentioned a specific body type as like “romancing a bag of antlers,” because I thought it hi-larious as toss off into the anonymous internet. Someone on the chat line with that body type objected IN ALL CAPS,to my my dismissive attitude and opinion and others kn the group were happy to point out I could not be a (fill in the blank) if I thought that, bla bla blaa et al, etc. Then the next day, she was hit by a bus and died, miserable!!!
Well, maybe not, it was the middle 90’s and the web was just a blip on the horizon.

I realize there are more honored Tribes within the Latinos, the same is among the Anglos. My heritage is Saxons, Celts. and Vikings, The only time they massaged their hands was after the battle. Thank you.

Ooooooh, I see! You were just being a little hypocritical when you tore a strip off of me (joking, just joking) . Had I known the back story I might have replied to you that I was committing suicide out of guilt for having hurt your feelings and force you to put your second notch on your smoking and deadly keyboard. But, I doubt, I’d do that to a fellow Oregonian. What I said must not have been all that bad then because you only used ALL CAPS for one word. I’ll bet you were massaging your hands after leaving that rebuke for me though.

Hel hath no fury like morriganinoregon!
