Discussion: Experts Say Ruth Bader Ginsburg Walks A Fine Line With Criticism Of Trump

Concern trolls. “I’m so very concerned the SCOTUS may (gasp) seem political!”

Hey do you remember when no politician was suppose to criticize a President on foreign soil or bash a President’s children while in office. All happened under Obama. Now saying Ginsberg is breaking some kind of code that could lead to a bias Supreme Court. LOL Like the Supreme Court isn’t biased and traditions have not been broken lately in DC.

I seem to recall all of the times Scalia skipped Obama’s State of the Union, thereby showing his contempt for a SITTING PRESIDENT. Trump isn’t president and hopefully he won’t be.

The members of the Supreme Court have political biases? Who would have thought. Samuel Alito kind of gave that away at that one State of the Union address where he mouthed…“Not True” to something Obama said. The Supreme Court has always been a political institution, although it probably wasn’t wise to say what she said. It gives Trump ammunition.

Where were the experts when Scalia was right-wing ranting?

#1 Nobody questioned Scalia or Thomas’ right to speak out against a president much less a presidential candidate.

#2 Nobody questioned a male justice speaking out at all about anything.

#3 One of the Hebrew heritage might feel compelled to speak up about a candidate that she clearly perceives as a demagogue and threat to a republic. After Trump’s remarks about Judge Garland and his heritage, how could she not have reservations if not worry?

It’s not as if Donald Trump doesn’t seem to understand the Constitution or the limit to a president’s power. He deliberately misleads his supporters on that count as well.

Trump complains about the system being rigged against him, while he pushes the boundaries to full advantage. Enough with demanding respect towards the evil fascist – silence only enables him. We need people in positions of power to be honest about the threat he presents, not just to sit there being polite. RBG is a hero.

I agree. That was the first and clear cut sign that conservative forces would put their power above the existence of a republic.

But he said Ginsburg’s most recent remark to CNN, that Trump is a “faker” who should release his tax returns, bordered on opposition to his candidacy.

Note to the concern trolls: What she said is the unvarnished truth. NOT political opinion. The truth. Scalia, may he burn the remainder of eternity, had no qualms about showing his disrespect for the current POTUS, as so many people have just pointed out above. She is, indeed, a hero for standng up for reality.

Oh, yes, it’s horrible that the left doesn’t let the right walk all over them in the name of imaginary rules of comity.

Your concern is noted. And oh, so warranted, because clearly, Bush v. Gore was an entirely apolitical decision decided solely on the facts and the law which creates no legitimate grounds for cynicism whatsoever.

Not to mention cases they were hearing!

Polite traditions can result in a dictator. A justice must maintain some decorum but not be deferred from speaking out the truth in public. All public officials have a responsibility to the Constitution and the “republic” for which it stands.

Trump clearly doesn’t care about the republic or abusing power if he gets it. He’s said so continually during this presidential campaign. Justice Ginsburg takes him at his word. Why doesn’t the press or his own party believe him? Isn’t it better to be prudent than naive.

The the world would be a much better place if we all accepted others the way they see themselves instead of deluding ourselves till it’s too late.

We are talking about the difference between democracy versus a theocracy or dictatorship. This is not reality show shenanigans. There are real life repercussions to letting someone think they can cease power and use it in whatever way they please. Trump is vetting former military commanders as his right hand man. Why aren’t all the other justices concerned?

O’Connor said ‘terrible’ about GORE not Bush.
Your own reference even says so. And not only did she sayid about Gord, most reports indicate that O’Connor was the 5 th vote for Bush.
You need to correct your error

Hold on! She was trying to call attention to the fact that he is self-sufficient and only possesses the spiritual need for god. She called him a “fakir”.

RBG is well within her rights to say what she said.

We should never expect our SCOTUS Justices to be free of political opinion.

We should always expect our SCOTUS Justices to be able to put their personal opinions aside and judge cases on their merits and according to the law.

I’m only glad that Sandra Day O’Conner was able to overcome the distress she gasped out at that cocktail party and vote for Bush in Bush v. Gore. And h/t to Sara for her fair and balanced correction of the record on whose election so dismayed her, eh?

I mean, FFS, really? This isn’t like substituting a “(D)” for an “®” after someone’s name. Takes a lot of Freud to make a switch of that magnitude in such a well-known, even notorious, anecdote.

She came to regret her vote…a tiny bit of regret.

Bottom line: the country loses more than it gains by her comments. They were not particularly insightful or anything that many thousands of others haven’t said. They carry no weight with the pro-Trump forces–or even with some of the anti-Trump forces. I trust there will not be litigation in the course of the upcoming election processes that will require an opinion of the SCOTUS, but if there were, her comments would potentially taint any outcome.
