Discussion: Ex-Va. State Senator Whose Resignation Prompted Investigation Lawyers Up

if it’s not bribery than what is it

They’re victims of the GOP propaganda machine. Not much opportunity to look up the truth when you can barely afford to pay for electricity (let alone a computer and internet connection), have to spend all your time scrounging to get enough to live on, and were screwed out of a decent education.

It’s not quite that clear-cut. His daughter was appointed temporarily to the judgeship, subject to legislative approval. Her appointment has bipartisan approval. But the VA Senate has a policy of not appointing relatives of sitting legislators to judgeships, so her permanent appointment was blocked. It’s not a law, but is, in fact, a Senate tradition.

So, this judgeship wasn’t ginned up as some sort of reward - she’s already serving in the position. The Republicans didn’t say, “Resign, and we’ll find a nice spot for your daughter.” Puckett probably realized that he wasn’t going to get reelected, and figured he’d remove the obstacle to his daughter’s tenure.

The spot on the tobacco commission, on the other hand, stinks. That has all the earmarks of a bribe.

Now you are just making me want to watch Mona Lisa Vito explain the meaning of a bullsh*t question.

Great. I hope the lawyer bills land him in the poorhouse.

Withdrawing ones name from consideration for the tobacco commission does not exonerate one from perceived quid pro quo.

We have a state senator from Virginia calling in the lawyers. We have the former Gov. of Virginia calling his kids to testify (what a good daddy he is…)

On the positive side, Virginia isn’t trying to out Crazy Florida or Texas. Virginia puts corrupt people in office, but keeps the crazy people out of the news!

Bribery used to be illegal.

Jail jail jail, jail jail jail, jail jail jail, someone’s goin’ to jail!

Thanks for the clarification. That said - She ought to resign. I’m not a fan of lawyers, or their business. I haven’t found any statements attributed to her on this matter. She should publicly disavow herself of her father’s behavior and herself call for a criminal investigation. Otherwise, who knows if she counseled her father. Her integrity is tainted by this … And to beat the dead horse … four hundred thousand folks got screwed. Thanks again for the back story.
