Did he set his slaves free in his will?

In the Senate, Hollings gained a reputation as a skilled insider with keen intellectual powers.

It is literary week at TPM. First, palm trees swaying in the Mar a Lago breeze. Now, Fritz Hollings was renowned for his keen intellectual powers, this quintessential Dixiecrat from the last generation of Southern Democrats who eventually all moved to the post-Reagan and FOX GOP.

There is a world of policy issues I have disagreed with Hollings on, but one thing I can say is that this country would be far better off today if there had been more politicians from the Deep South like him.

Never heard of him.

Your comment leaves me wondering what you could possibly mean.

If I had to re-phrase, I’d say the country would be far better off today if there had been more politicians from the Deep South like Fannie Lou Hamer and John Lewis – and none at all like Fritz Hollings (or others worse even than him).

Merely more Hollings, less Thurmond, Sessions, et al., that’s all.

That I can agree with. Thanks for clarifying.
