Discussion: Ex-Senior At Elite New Hampshire Prep School Acquitted Of Felony Rape

Discussion for article #239894

If I were the parents of that minor victim, I would sue Saint Paul’s School for dozens of milllions of dollars, effectively shutting down the school forever. Testimony from the school administrators was the most evasive and convoluted bunch of bull pucky I have ever heard.

The perp was said to be getting a scholarship to Harvard, too. Tuff cookies.

Why is this TPM Breaking News? How does it relate to politics or policy?

This verdict shows the value of good legal representation. Look at the extreme makeover the defendant underwent. “Harry Potter” was acquitted where “California surfer dude” may well have been convicted.

Labrie, an aspiring minister…

About says it all to me.

Can’t say for sure but I get a vibe that he did have intercourse with her, lied about it and got a favorable jury. The girl was 15. Fucking 15 and this puke is going to walk.

Jay Carney, the defense lawyer, really pulled one out of the that.

Article title says he was convicted of sex charges. Comment section title says he was acquitted of rape. Both are accurate but, man, sloppy sloppy TPM.

I think that school’s endowment has more money per student than any college or prep school in the country, even Harvard. Not that they shouldn’t go for it but just so you know what you’re dealing with.

Defense attorney J.W. Carney told the jury that St. Paul’s treated Labrie “shabbily” by taking away an award he received for character and devotion to the school

Oh, poor baby. Loosing your award for character over a little thing like a conviction on multiple sexual offenses against a minor, that must be so horrible. /s

No way was this NOT a felony. An 18 year old raped an underage 15 year old girl, and the jury of nine MEN and three women said no? Who thought it was a good idea to have NINE men on that jury? This is another good example of how the rich get away with rape or murder, he will serve no time.

Woman wihin: Well, don’t let the facts get in the way of your opinions. The incident was not reported to any authorities for five days, during which time the victim continued positive correspondance with the perpetrator. The facts are also that she willingly met up with the perpetrator, she was not ambushed, nor forced to drink or take drugs before the event. The technical legal definition of “rape” under NH statutes was never established in court.

Also, being convicted of five (5) sexual misdemeanors will carry a heavy burden for the perp. He will be required to register of a sexual offender, and may well have to serve prison time for so many misdemeanors. Currently in court, there is a bail hearing going on before formal sentencing which will happen in 30 days. Again, don’t let facts get in the way of your opinions

I’m not sure what this has to do with whether or not she was raped.

What a great photo, the kid has the “I just got away with it, too bad cop” look, while the cop has that “man I’d like to kick your ass” look.

Legally though, it was the correct call. Even though she was 15, in NH the more serious charge required proof of non-consent, and that in no way was proven beyond a reasonable doubt, in fact the opposite is the more likely scenario since correspondence she sent to him for a few days afterward was friendly. The other charges are legit and stuck, she still was only 15.

No, it’s just a fact to assert that this was a willingly-engaged-in encounter, where both parties consented. Genital Intercourse did NOT take place. Please refer to the NH statutes for the legal definitions of “rape”, which the jury used in making their decision.

Both parties acknowledged that the victim remains a “virgin”.

That’s the most important factor for sure. This was the correct legal decision.

And if his name had been Tyrone, he’d have the felony and 20 years in prison ahead of him.

I didn’t realize that. What I was referring to is the fact that most rapes aren’t ambushes and it’s usually a man the victim knows, a man with whom she willingly spent time. Where alcohol and drugs are involved, the victim usually isn’t forced to drink or take drugs. Despite those things, it’s still rape.

why even question it? its a story because there is a very real and sick rape culture in this country. denying that doesn’t make it go away. this asshole deserved much more punishment, that said its also a story bc this school has a history of this behavior and its a story of class in this country.

Entirely irrelevant. Just because something would be relevant if it did happen does not mean its absence is relevant.
