Lazlo Boros argues according to his fairly controversial thesis that deuterium, a stable hydrogen isotope, monkey-wrenches mitochondria, the battery part of the cell, so as to cause cancer, aging and other unwanted things. He claims that deuterium-depleted water can reverse cancer and lengthen lifespans in e.g. rats. Maybe he’s nuts, maybe not. But where is all this extra deuterium coming from in the modern world? Isotope fractionation in evaporating sea water changes as the oceans heat, which is bad for humans that have evolved drinking mostly isotope-depleted water. The WHO notes that cancer rates have been increasing across the board. Anti-smoking campaigns probably would have the biggest effect, but the background notion of rising deuterium content in everything should at least give pause. Any warming of the seas may be problematic, but up to now we’ve seen them as buffers mitigating the heating effect.
Two isotopes, Oxygen 18 and Deuterium, are used as proxies for climate change. So as temperature rises, less deuterium depletion in the water cycle.
The main reason for this is the basic fact that the maximum amount of moisture that air can hold drops with decreasing temperatures. When humid air cools, at some point the water molecules will condensate to form precipitation. As the heavier isotopes have a slightly larger tendency to condensate, the humid air mass will gradually lose relatively more and more of the water molecules containing heavy isotopes (18O and Deuterium; D or 2H). Every time precipitation forms, the air mass will become more depleted in heavy isotopes. In the language of physics, fractionation takes place. During cold conditions (e.g. during winter or in a cold climatic period), the air masses arriving in Greenland have cooled more on the way, thereby having formed more precipitation and the remaining vapor is therefore more depleted in heavy isotopes (corresponding to lower δ18O vales).

I’m sure these leaders understand that very well. At this point what they’re attempting is damage control, because if the U.S. walks away from the Paris Accord that may be taken by other countries as permission to blow off the issue as well.
So I think their hope is that by keeping the U.S. in the accord, even if the Trump administration’s participation is in truth merely symbolic, that is better than the symbolism of the U.S. officially pulling out of the accord, and leaves room for a saner U.S. president to resume a leadership role (or at least a non-adversarial role) on this issue in 2021.
