Discussion: Ethics Director Says Trump Has Made The US A 'Laughingstock' Abroad

She probably has a second cousin twice removed that once spent a summer in Iran. So, you know, OK.

ā€œThe truth is, Mr. Schaub […] is interested in grandstanding and lobbying for more expansive powers in the office he holds.ā€

Um….who does this fit to a tee? Classic Trumpian projection from Walters.

The Italians aren’t laughing. They understand the problems here. Berlusconi was rich, corrupt & incompetent, too; at least he could sing.

The ethics thing is a bigger deal than people may think. The US and the G7 have been working for about 20 years to get across the idea that giving and taking bribes as a cost of doing business is a bad way to run things. And now back to sqaure one.

ā€œIt’s hard for the United States to pursue international anticorruption
and ethics initiatives when we’re not even keeping our own side of the
street clean".

That’s a feature, not a bug.

It’s interesting how the White House characterizes those who have already left. If they leave because of scandal (Flynn, Manafort, Lewandowski) they are patriots who are misunderstood or under-appreciated. If they leave because they can’t stand the stench (Shaub) or who are fired for doing their jobs (Yates, Comey) they are either subversive, ā€œwhack jobs,ā€ or grandstanders. Nice value system we have here.

And you have to have actually experienced German newscasts to truly understand how big a shift this is. Most German news is still in the classic ā€œearnest talking headā€ model. They make the BBC look positively relaxed.

it is no wonder the rest of the world thinks he is cognitively impaired - or off-kilter

FUNDAMENTALLY - Trump has no - zero - original productive thoughts - no vision and … damn it - it is impossible to identify what he truly stands for - because he is too incoherent to craft an overall strategic position and only speaks using broad nonspecific, but excessive, superlatives

… but then again bank robbers don’t formulate comprehensive strategic positions while they are feverishly emptying the vault before the law shows up

I was just thinking yesterday that this country now has less credibility and respect than Italy of all places. I try not to think too much about empire in respect to the US, but once an empire’s stability becomes a serious question, the essential faith that sustains its global position withers. Just like the dollar is faith and the justice system is faith, empire is faith. I worry that the only thing that can restore the country’s central myth is serious tribulation. And for the first time, I don’t take it on faith that America can survive tribulation or deserves to.

These two men have far more in common than they have in contrast - and that is a dismal situation.

Is this really real?

Trump claimed that respect for the USA would increase under his presidency. He meant to say disrespect.
