Discussion: Ellison Resigns As DNC Deputy Chair After Winning MN AG Race

Ellison was elected Minnesota attorney general on Tuesday despite an ex-girlfriend’s accusation of domestic abuse, which Ellison has denied.

In Minnesota his allies say he was cleared of that accusation but:

The lawyer’s probe into [Karen] Monahan’s allegations noted that Monahan talked about the allegations with her therapist in June 2018. But after reviewing therapist’s notes, the lawyer deemed Monahan’s story “inconsistent” as she said Ellison "dragged" her off the bed rather than “tried to pull her off the bed.”

Calling that an inconsistency is beyond ridiculous.

If they cleared him, I hope they had a better reason than that.

I think you have that backwards. To not clear him she would have to present BETTER EVIDENCE than that. She claimed to have a video of the alleged incident but could not produce it.

The allegations were found to not be credible.

Yes, her withholding a recording because it was supposedly embarrassing did not help her case.

On the other hand, the so-called inconsistency they accused her of is really too stupid for words.

“Tried to pull her off” means he didn’t succeed. “Dragged her off” means he did succeed. That does seem inconsistent to me.

Also, I once swung a gift bag containing cooked yams at my former husband when he was refusing to cooperate with me on a reasonable request, and if that disqualified me from public service notwithstanding my other qualifications on the plus side of the ledger I would wonder what the world was coming to. Keith has been a dogged public servant and is going to acquit himself well in that office, I am confident of that.

Women are generally allowed to assault men without consequence. We’re supposed to ‘be men’ and brush it off. How often do you violently assault your husband? If any man ever made that claim about his wife, he’d be torn to shreds here…

Initial accusation was that Ellison dragged her off the bed. She also said that she recorded the incident “discreetly” with her phone. That video never was shown to anyone. Later, she clarified that she was not dragged off the bed but Ellison pulled a shoe off as he was tagging at her foot. It looks to me as a bickering of a couple who recently broke up. These accusations are pernicious, difficult to substantiate, difficult to be cleared off, and the stench will always remain.

Yes, that’s the only way to read an inconsistency into her words.

History being what it has been, I do tend to lean towards accusers, but this one, as we’ve all noted above, is not easy to defend. Nevertheless I do hope she is OK.

(Oh, as for your having wielded cooked yams in anger, I’ll just call attention here to the fact that you yourself have put the incident on the negative side of your ledger.)

Yes, thank you for elaborating.

Ellison was elected Minnesota attorney general on Tuesday despite an ex-girlfriend’s accusation of domestic abuse, which Ellison has denied.

And when the accusation was unsubstantiated. Why isn’t the rest of the story here, because I could find it - TPM couldn’t?

At the end of it all, it was found that HE was the one that incurred the abuse, not her.

Good for Mr. Ellison. I am certain that he will make an excellent Attorney General for Minnesota.

We do not, in this country, clear people because there is a sufficient reason to clear them. We charge them when there is sufficient evidence to warrant doing so.

If you check, you’ll see that the process I was talking about involved neither police, nor prosecutor, nor judge, nor jury. It was an investigation commissioned by Ellison’s own political party.

But they were cooked yams so it’s ok.

Uncooked yams would hurt a lot more… ; )

Congratulations, Keith.

Now go get 'em.
