Good idea! These days everybody is so wound up you just never know what might inadvertently set someone off on a rant because the battery on their snarkmeter is running low.
Dog knows, I’ve gone off the deep end myself more than once and someone has had to remind me to reset the meter.

Yeah really, I have always felt my most conserative christian friends seem like they were the wildest and once they started having kids felt guilty, got worried their kids would follow in their footsteps, so converted to conserative christians. And I think they actually like the idea of folks that don’t repent and follow will be punished!

First American tribes are allowed to catch these fish as they have been doing long before the white man arrived. There are limits on how many Chinook (not sure about Steelhead) can be caught by non Indians.

Yes and humans are idiots about wild animals which is why I have always disliked the shows like the late Steve Irwin’s - getting up close and personal with wildlife. It doesn’t want to get up close and personal with humans.
But humans are idiots - when I worked in a little grocery store in the mountains in Colorado, people would ask me what to put out to attract bears to their campsites so their kids could see one. I showed great restraint - I never said: Well you could tie your kid to a tree and give him a sack of oily sunflower seeds. Guarantee you he will see a bear.

I say, good for the elephant seals, it’s their beach and maybe they should just make sure people can’t get on the beach to disturb them. People are idiots and will think they can walk up to them and maybe sit and have a chat.
The other thing that drives me wild is seals and sea lions get blamed for depleting the wild salmon. I lived in Seattle in the days when people at the locks used to do all sorts of things to harass and chase away the sea lions because they ate the salmon. Talk about hypocrisy, the humans were the ones eating all the salmon and still are.

Elephant Seals are not fish eaters so much. They dive deep for squid.
The fish they do take tend to be bottom fish like skates.

It is far from clear to me that these guys know what “objective truth” means. Revealed truth based on religious belief doesn’t make it.

However, the California sea lions have migrated north and a growing population do hang out in the Columbia river and eat salmon trying to navigate bonneville damn. So they are part of the problem and a cull program in the Columbia is appropriate until we get the populations up.
Side note - this discussion is mixing and matching pinnipeds. The animals expanding their breeding beaches in Point Reyes NP are elephant seals and the salmon eaters are California sea lions
