Discussion: Eight House Republicans Buck Trump, Vote For Bill To Reopen Gov't Agencies

These eight need to recruit more of their Republican House colleagues to the cause and to really start pressuring members from the Republican Senate caucus. As Trump starts seeing Republicans turning away from him it will drive him to distraction.

If they think doubling down on blaming the Dems is going to work they are in worse shape than I thought. New polls out still showing Trump and GOP getting the blame. These Republicans deserve what is coming their way.

With McConnell it is as if an android tasked with

  • installing Reactionary Federal Judges;
  • enriching the .001%;
  • destroying the mechanisms of representative government

has been created. His mission is clear

It’s us who are still too nice with him**

** To this second* McConnell is treated and described in all corners as a typical legislator. He is not. At least not to Michael Tomasky

2/3rd for override, 66 Senate, 290 House (but 1 vacant for 289).
Dems/Indy 47 Seante, 235 House.
Need Republicans 19 in Senate, 54 in House for override.

Might be a tall order in these trying times, particularly in the Senate.

This was a useful article. But why do journalists, in articles like this, seem resistant to giving the vote totals. I always appreciate that info and yet it appears to be some accepted practice to avoid that.

The compassionate conservatives have all gone the way of the guagga.

And this is most likely what will happen. Once a few House Rethugs get seriously cold feet, don’t see a way out of this and not want to go the way of the other Rethugs in 2018, then more can pile on without fear of going first.

After that, Senators join them because they’re just following the House.

After that, it’s katy bar the door.

This - times millions. That’s what I think too. There are nervous senators already - people who are hearing from their constituents about the shutdown and who are up for re-election in 2020.

Any elected GOOPer will watch what fellow GOOPers do. In this case the handwriting on the wall is becoming clearer more quickly to those in the House. R senators will fall in line. They will put pressure on Turtle to act because THEY don’t want to lose in 2020.

I don’t think McConnell is concerned with cloture. Simply bringing the House bills to the floor would be an affront to Trump which hurts McConnell politically with the base. A cloture vote, even if it fails, would put all GOP Senators on record which would be a political nightmare for all of them, most especially those up for reelection in 2020. Surprisingly, McConnell is putting his personal and party politics ahead of the welfare of 800,000 Federal employees and the general populace who rely on the shuttered services.

Does the House pressure really affect the Senate? I think Governors would have more clout with them.

Unsurprisingly

Right. It’s not Trump and McConnell’s government to shut down.

Actually, “compassionate conservatives” have gone the way of the unicorn: myth and fantasy.

By the way…

Here is the Bad News

If we buckle to Drumpf, it will come about that he owns us, that he has a tactic that he can use at will and this WILL make his demands rise EXPONENTIALLY.

There is no other way this is going down.

In a sense, McConnell’s rolling the dice, letting families suffer and the nation become more endangered is a smart play for such a depraved spirit that McConnell possesses. Yes, Drumpf may fold, but what if he WINS?

For Yertle, his agenda can be further along

I think Speaker Pelosi and Chuck Schumer are already aware of that. He isn’t going to win.
