Discussion: Ebola Outbreak Could Cost Up To $32 Billion

Discussion for article #228579

Doesn’t that Dallas WalMart have a giant box of Ebola for $15 Billion?

That is a big expense for a poor part of the world to absorb.

These numbers are completely out of the blue. Nobody can say when the ebola crisis ends, if ever. For example, the Reston variant of ebola, which established itself in the Philippines and is mainly a problem for pigs, has lasted for nearly 30 years. The Spanish Flu cost roughly 2% of global GDP the years 1918 through 1920. In current money, that would be about $1.6 trillion a year should it become pandemic. Oddly, the survivors of ebola may be the real helpers in containing and putting ebola back in the bottle. They appear to be immune to reinfection, so can operate where others have to wear Category 4 pathogen protection, and their blood can be used to help those infected. Bill Gates or Oprah should give a free car to every person who recovers and returns the ebola front lines.
